blade steel question

Hello I need to know what blade steel is better....NOTE.... I am a new knife collector and I really dont have any experience with steels other than 8cr13mov and 154cm steel....soo which one is better Vg 10 or aus 8
 
"Better" is always subjective.

VG10 holds an edge longer because there is higher carbon content (~1% vs ~0.8%). They both take very fine edges. Both are Japanese stainless steels. AUS8 is cheaper. With a good HT they are both serviceable blades

Most people would prefer VG10, myself included
 
Good choice on that knife, but I believe it is deal spotting to put that link on there, so I would remove it if I were you before a mod sees it!

Also, I have learned over the years not to make knife decisions based solely on the blade steel. There are plenty of other factors to consider. Even for cutting performance, the heat treat, grind, edge geometry, and blade geometry all play a big role.

Out of curiosity, what was the other knife you were considering?
 
Vg 10. One of the first super steels. More uniform carbide distribution, harder and tougher. Aus8 that has been cryo or sub zero treated is excellent, but overall Vg-10 is a better steel.
 
Both are good steels, vg10 will hold a better edge for a bit longer but like res1cue said, both are serviceable steels with good pedigree. For a hard use knife, I would prefer vg10 over aus 8, particularly for cutting wood as I have heard aus8 can be "slippery" on wood surfaces. I don't have any experience with this as aus8 is typically seen in folders and most fixed blade hard use bushcraft style fixed blades are typically high carbon.

Better for what?

It really will come down to the knives in question more so that those 2 steels, both are good tough steels.

Just get the knife you like the best and use it.
