i'm gonna try some new blade steels and i don't want to waste my money, so which steels do you guys use? i've already tried o-1 and 440c, nice steels. i'd like to stay away from stainless, and i like making large knives.

5160-very forgiving of heat treating errors
52100- A better cutter than 5160, but sensitive to heat range mistakes
10XX series- easy to work, and heat treat, and very inexpensive
92XX series-very similar to 5160
L-6- easy to work and less critical of heat treatment methods
S series- A bit more difficult to work, but extremly tough and resilient.

darren,
thanks but isn't 440v and 420v extremely expensive? and i was under the impression it was also brittle. do you have experience with it or ats-34
and ed,
thanks for the advice, where can i find some heat treating IN's on 52100?

Magnum .44,

Drop me a note off forum, and I'll dig up the information on 52100 for you. The last I knew it was available from Sheffield and Daryl Meyer in flat stock. If you have trouble finding it, I try to keep some around, or would be happy to forge some out.
