Hi, I'm wondering what type of steel is used in the Westen Line of fixed bald knives. Namely the "Small Game Fixed Blade Knife…..#WL628" and the "Rawhide Fixed Blade Knife…..#WL66"

Also, I used to have a Western Knife like the WL628 but it had a blood groove and some sort of stacked mettle handle. Any one have a clue as to what the knife could have been? Sorry, but I don't have it any more to get any numbers off of it. Lost it on a camping trip in 6' of snow in 1998.

- two more things that I forgot - What is the going price on a new WL628 and what is the RC hardness of the steel?

wildmanh,
The current steel used for the WESTERN Fixed blade line is 420HC. It is hardened to a Rc of 58. I'm not sure about any WESTERN models featuring stacked "mettle"[metal?] handles, but I'll check with some folks that would have the records of the older models. IF I find anything, I'll post it here.

Thanks for the interest!

Will, thanks for the information and effort.

Here is a picture that should give you an idea of what the knife looked like:

I would also like to thank Camillus (western)for such a good knife. I got the knife used from a Thrift store. It was all covered in paint and other stuff. I spent hours cleaning it then put a good edge back on it. But after that it served me well for many years.

I will certainly be purchasing more Camillus and Western knives in the future. It was the best little hunting knife I've ever owned. :-)

Thanks again for the information. Keep up the good work.

Heber
