Hello all, I am interested in the BK&T line (primarily the Patrol Machete and the Brute)and have a few steel questions.
1- Is a cryogenic quench used?
2- How dose the 0170-6C steel compare interms of impact strength (Izod or Charpy tests) with other steels used by Camillus such as 440A, 420HC, and 1095?
3-Has camillus concidered using a nitriding steel a'la Busse?
Thanks!

Frank,
The engineering dept is closed as we go on "summer shutdown" for a couple of weeks every summer, but I'll do the best I can with your questions....

1. We do not Cryo the BK&T line...we found that with that steel and the heat treat that we use, it gave no advantage.

2. I know of now Charpy testing done on the 0170-6C steel, but from experience, the impact resistance of 0170-6C is superior to the stainless steels mentioned. WAY superior.

3. No, we have not looked at Nitriding. We have a VERY involved heat treat process that we use with the 0170-6C. We are very happy with its performance and find that our customers are happy with it also. Especially when you look at the price.

I'm not sure if I gave you the info you were looking for, but I hope it helps. 0170-6C is a VERY CLEAN high carbon steel that we have a VERY consistant heat treat process designed for. We think you will like it, give it a try

Frank;
They are perfect just the way they are. I have both the machete and the Brute (among others too)and I could not ask for a better job of building these knives...VERY TOUGH and very sharp and feel GREAT in the hands.
