I'm new to the knife game and I was wondering which steel would be best for outdoor uses. More of a survival blade

Bishop, if you choose to use my articles, could you please attribute them to me as author? I let people re-print those articles wherever they want, but I do insist on being credited for my copyrighted work, and feel that that's only fair. Thanks!

BTW, there's a better, newer version of that article (the Steel FAQ)...

Joe

I did look again. I forgot the name but I did not take credit for it. Sorry If you thought I stole it. I will add your name now.

bishop, no sweat, I didn't think you stole it, but did notice my name wasn't there. No harm done, just please slap me with the author credit. BTW, I'm a little touchy about it these days, because there is at least one site on the web where the guy did outright steal it, making it appear that he's the author.

BTW, newest version of the FAQs here, including the improved Steel fAQ. http://www.edcknives.com/faqs.html

I keep asking Spark to update them. He metaphorically tousles my hair, gives me a quarter and sends me on my way.

Mr. Joe Talmadge, i agree with Klattman. I just spent about an hour reading your FAQs and have learned more about knives than I knew before. Thank you for letting us (newbes) have access to them.

Thanks guys! No lies, it makes me feel great that you're finding them so useful. And I appreciate all the folks who have put it on their websites.

Joe

ah hell, i'm throwing in my praise too... Joe, what can i say, those FAQs pretty much taught me how to sharpen. i still come back to them all the time. thanks very much for the effort and knowledge.

For outdoor knives I'm voting S30V (except you gotta have like a diamond stone or stick with you) or if you don't like that, ATS-34 or maybe even AUS-8. I'd stay away from the carbon steels, too much rust potential... D-2 is great but only semi stainless...

Then again, I could be wrong! :D

I don't know about that. The spyderco ceramics are plenty hard enough (I think most artificial stones would be) to work on S30V. Diamond stones usually come in coarser grades though, so that may be an advantage.

S30V is fine, I think you want something stainless if you go out often, or if it is hard to clean.
Besides S30V, 154CM, VG10, ATS34, and AUS10, (H1 for saltwater) are all good stainless choices, as well as 440C or HC series depending on cost. I would rate D2 as good as well, especially if you remember to wipe it clean periodically, or if you find the perfect style and it's only made in D2.

S30V may be a bit expensive for a knife you may want to treat roughly.
