I was sharpening my nephew's new Buck 110, when we decided to find my old 110 (around 1972). We were wondering what blade steel was used back then?

Ima, The 3 dots were also of 440C blade steel . Not until the 4 dots (about 1982 or 83) was the steel changed to 425M . DM

simi hollow grind is the way to id 440c
normally the 4 dots were a full hollow grind not simi hollow
the exception is the 3 dot 111 it is full hollow grind and to the best of my knolage is the only one that is 440c that is full hollow grind!
also the three dot blades were heat treated by
paul bos as it was the start of his tenure of many years with buck
when this unique fact-toid surfaced the price of three dot blades went much higher on the auction sites
and in my humble thoughts are the best of the 440c blades!
of course the thicker blade edges of the simi hollow grind
are hard for most to sharpen
but for dave m and me and others it is no problem..
jest takes learning how..
yup would take a 3 dot any time to work with me

Thank you for the gentle correction Mr Martin, I almost didnt post that but then thought it was correct, thinking that the steel change was the reason for the 3rd dot.

Think nothing of it my friend a Freudian slip . As most here have done the same thing . Me as well . DM
