i am currently making my very first knife and it is going quite well and is near being finished. i have another plan ready to go and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a good steel i could use for my second. i used an old file for my first one which i have heard is not a bad steel to use but i found that the work it took to get it ready was quite a pain. if anyone has any suggestions on a steel i could use that is more forgiving and cheaper than others for a beginner knifemaker that would be awesome. thanks in advance for any suggestions

If you plan on doing the heat treat I'd recommend 1084 as a good starter steel. It is inexpensive and will heat treat well with minimal equipment. You can make a top quality knife with it.

I also like precision ground O1 steel, if you can control your heat with a kiln or send it off it is a good steel but costs more than the 1084.

What's your shop set-up? Pro-level grinder and a digitally controlled kiln... files, sandpaper and an old charcoal grill... or something in-between?

If you're planning to send it out for HT, you can use whatever steel you like. What characteristics are you looking for in your knife? That will determine the steel types to look into. Regardless, it's true that 1084 is inexpensive, easy to work with and can be made into excellent knives.

Doing your own HT, 1080 and 1084. They're inexpensive, easy to HT and give good results.
