I own several knives from several different makers, including, Benchmade,Spyderco,SOG,and Buck to name a few. The steels range from 420HC,AUS6M,AUS8,VG10 among others. I've heard alot about VG10 and carry my Spyderco. I was just wondering some opinions on others including 440C. Thanks for the help.

rs3604' this helped me alot. www.edcknives.com * author Joe Talmadge*
check out the FAQ section. they also have cool knives there too.
others on the forum will help out too....

VG-10 is the class act of the steels you have mentioned and is my favorite and in may opinion the BEST all around. Arguably as good or even better are: D2, M2, and S30V. And this will start some argument but the only folders you'll find that can seriously compete with Spydercos are Benchmades. In the one-hand-open/close/locking folder business these are the only two names you need to know. BTW many benchmades are in 440C or 154CM, which are good steels, with their better models in D2 and M2, and I believe they are starting to use S30V. Spyderco uses VG-10 for the most part, with S30V on their higher end models.

Yeah, what he said 440C and VG-10 were the only ones originally mentioned worth taking home. Go back 20 years and 440C was THE knife steel, I don't like the AUS steels and 420 just plain sucks. VG-10 is still the best all around though :D UNLESS we want to start talking CARBON steels but most of those, with the exception of M2 and D2 (which is semi-stainless, I know it can get confusing), are only used in fixed blades. 1095, A2, M2, D2, and that Becker Stuff:) are all GREAT!!!!
