Two questions here.
1-Has anyone here ever tried stipping just the blade of their Becker?
2-If you have to use only sandpaper, what grits are recommended? I was thinking 200, 400, and then 600?
Chemical stripping and blasting are not options for me. Thanks.

1- Yes, and I'm glad I did since I had stripped my 14 completely, and that one asks a lot of maintenance underneath the handle scales (until I reapplied paint underneath the scales).

2- No idea, I've used tape to protect the paint on the handle, and used paint stripper on the blade.

1. Yeah, that's how I strip all my Beckers, just the blade up to the handle.

2. Never tried with sandpaper. It'd take awhile and I don't see why chemical stripper isn't an option. It should be available at any auto parts or hardware store. If you absolutely must strip the knife with sandpaper I would stay away from the higher grit paper like the 600 during the initial sanding, I'd imagine that stuff'd clog up pretty quickly otherwise.

I chemically stripped my bk2. But I brought it from there to a near full polish. I had a hard time getting rid of the grind marks, so I dropped all the way down to 80 grit. I also sanded it wet. I went from 80, to 120, 400, 600, 800,then 1000. After that I hit it with some polishing compound. It is absolutely a mirror, but in the sun, you can still see some sanding marks. Hope that helps.

I did a thread not long ago where I stripped below the grind of my BK2 with 100 grit sandpaper. Took a while but it looks cool.

I scrape KA-BAR coating with a cheap knife blade, doesn't scratch the blade. Still a discolored layer underneath that can be cleaned up with sandpaper. Takes no time at all.

To piggyback another question on this thread, what sort of tape do you use for masking off the area near the handle you don't want stripped?

I don't, just crank down the handles if they're not already tight and spray the stripper over them. Never had a problem with the stripper seeping under the scales. But then again I usually just strip the blade. I would just use electrical tape.
