I have a regular production mini Griptilian with a s30v drop point blade that I desperately want to swap out for a s90v sheepsfoot. I recently heard Benchmade will only do a blade swap if the knife was a custom knife, not a production knife. Is there any truth to this?

No there is no truth in what u heard, from my experience. Called em to find out what their blade inventory was because I was thinking of shipping blades to neutered country, for thinning by excellent craftsman. The risk is that governance will take the blades, so I needed to know which ones and my cost if they "disappeared." BMC answered the phone quickly, and completely met my needs, walking through my list with me. With their info, I did not send my regular production / exclusives blades for service that I could not replace. I think there may be, or was, a different set of rules for knife blades bought from configurator. Maybe someone will pipe up, or you could search this forum or just call em.

From what I understand, if it was a production knife, then they would only replace it with whatever blade steel is the current standard. Swaps with a different blade steel were only available on knives from the custom shop. That’s what I was told when I called about swapping the blade in my custom Mini Grip last year.
My recent experience with replacing a Griptilian blade is as follows. I called Benchmade and got the correct information. I wanted to replace a black serrated Griptilian blade for a Doug Ritter Gritilian plain satin blade. I was told that the Doug Ritter Griptilian was a special run knife and that I could only swap the blade on my Griptilian with another blade that came on Griptilians. So I got a plain satin blade for my Griptilian In S30V. The original blade was 154CM.
