As I understand it, Sypderco stopped making the Wegner knife. Blade-tech is still offering them, and have 2 "custom" models. they are essentially the same, but one has a ti handle, and the other has one of micarta. Both are available in lefty versions (a bonus for me).

Does anyone have any experience with either of these 2 customs?

Do you think these are worth their prices of $300 for the micarta version, and $400 for the Ti version? I liked the Wegner, but those prices are steep for a set of nicer handle slabs.

How do you think one would stack up to the Sebenza?

The reason I ask is I have a lefty Sebenza, but am considering replacing it with something more durable. These seem like possible candidates.

thanks

Matt

I believe Spyderco discontinued the smaller version (Wegner jr), but is still producing the full size version.

I believe Dexter Ewing has one and said it was an excellent knife. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

I can't see how a liner lock with Ti or Micarta scales would outlast a Ti handled integral lock.

I should expound on that--I am speaking in terms of durability of the blade and the cutting edge. While I have not really done any heavy cutting with mine yet, I am almost afraid to due to the very narrow profile of the edge. I have also heard of some others having problems with blade chipping--although their applications seemed to be bordering on abuse.

I used to have one of the plain jane Spyderco Wegners and I don't think I would fear cutting anything with that knife. The blade and the profile were very rugged, and it still was an awesome cutter.

Thanks for the replies.

First off, only the Wegner Jr. is discontinued. The Big Weg is still going to be around for a while.

Blade-Tech's Pro Hunter is a handmade folder made by Phil Boguszewski. I've paid more than $300 for a micarta handled ATS-34 liner-lock handmade. You'll pay more for a similarly sized Sebenza, so I guess the price is actually pretty good.

I have handled both knives, and to be honest the Ti handle just doesn't do it for me.

Want something really tough? Call Tim and ask about a fixed blade Pro Hunter. Worth the wait and the $$.

I have the Wegner/Boguszewsi Micarta handled version,S/N 28. It is a heck of a nice knife. Will it outperform the Spydie version? I don't know. I have had one of the Spidies for some time now and you'd have to tweak both pretty hard for a folder to get them near their limits. I look at it this way: for a custom serialized Boguszewski made version of an excellent and time tested design, it is a bargain!
