Blade-Tech Pro Hunter Junior Review

Blade-Tech http://www.blade-tech.com/home.php is a company best known for its gun holsters and Tek-Lok holster and sheath attachments. The cutlery division, in turn, is probably best known for its collaborations with Spyderco. The Spyderco Tim Wegner and Wegner Junior were released in 1997, followed by by the Wegner designed Spyderco Ocelot in 2005. Tim Wegner is Blade-Tech’s owner/founder.

Blade-Tech knives have a low profile here at BladeForums, but I’ve been impressed by my recent acquisition of a Blade-Tech Pro Hunter Junior. The knife is about the same size as a Spyderco Delica or Byrd Meadowlark, with a 2 7/8 inch blade ground from AUS 8 stainless steel. It is made in Taiwan.

Fit and finish on the Pro Hunter Junior is very good. Opening action is smooth and easy via the Blade-Tech pear shaped “V-Hole.” The nested steel liner lock is secure, but looks extraordinarily thin. The polished steel clip looks great but isn’t as grippy as some. Similarly, the FRN black scales aren’t as grippy as I would like. The fiberglass reinforced nylon is styled to look like G10, but isn’t as textured.

Where the knife shines is in its ergonomics. The curved handle feels great in the hand, and the upswept saber ground blade is designed for precision cutting. It has three points of jimping: one on the thumb ramp, one near the the knife tip, and one about halfway in between.

I bought my Pro Hunter Junior from a BladeForums member who bought it at a Blade show. It seems out of stock at retailers but had been offered at an MSRP of $35.95 and a street price around $25. It’s bigger brother, the Pro Hunter Magnum, is currently in available, as are a number of other knives from Blade-Tech. The Pro Hunter Magnum is made in the USA, has an S30V blade, and has G10 scales in a variety of colors. You can find it online for $170 and it is definitely worth a look.
