Does anyone know where I can get a Blade Tech Pro Hunter in G-10. I know that you can get them strait from Blade Tech, but they seem a little high. Bladeart lists them in carbon fiber, but no G-10. Thanks for any help.

Bladeart used to have the best prices - $94 for the G10 version. Perhaps they are out of stock - why don't you email Ida of Bladeart to ask?

I asked the same question a few weeks ago and emailed Bladeart twice but got no reply. Not sure what your reasons are for wanting the Bladetech but I have the Spyderco version. The spyderco version is a good knife(and I'm sure the Bladetech is also) but for a folding hunter I think there are better choices at a lower price, e.g., the drop point Griptilian. Got one of these instead in D2 and this knife looks just dandy for a folding hunter. I have used folders(primarily Kershaw folding field ) as well as fixed blades to field dress and cut for packing a fair amount of big game(moose) so I feel like I know what works.

you can try posting on the 'other' forum to ask Ida. I think there is a world of difference between the Prohunter n Grip. Prohunter has better steel, better build, better handle materials, larger and sturdier...altho' the Grip has got the axis. Both good, but I'm not sure they're both in the same class of knives.

I consider the Pro Hunter another evolutionary step in Wegner's design with better materials. I'm also considering a G-10 and emailed Larry at BladeArt yesterday but so far haven't gotten a response. I'll try the route at the "other forum". I know of no other source besides Blade Art and Blade-Tech and agree the B-T list price is too much.

There is an excellent article in the current issue of Tactical Knives on the genesis and evolution of the Hunter design.

Thanks for your input guys. I have the Spyderco version of the same knife, and for several years it has been my all time favorite hunting blade. I have dressed many deer and hogs with it, and it is damn near perfect. I just was wanting the newer version to give it a test run. I too have tried to e-mail Bladeart, but the must be to busy to talk to any of us from the way it sounds.

If we are responding to a website, why should we be forced to call them rather than drop them an e-mail? The problem is , most business hours I am out in the boondocks where even my cell phone won't work. If they are going to do business over the internet, the should answer their mail.

I'm delighted to find that there is someone who actually dresses out game with their Pro Hunter or Spyderco version thereof. I've never seen one in use in Alaska. I posted on the hunt forums(also here) trying to find someone who had used them for field dressing big game and got zero response. There are obviously matters of preference here, but like one of the posters on another thread, I just don't like slab handles for extended field use and apparently few others do also. The thinner they get, the worse they are, and the ones without back spacers still worse. Perfect they may be for carry and tactical use, but if that was a preferred shape for other uses, fixed blades with slab handles would predominate and butchers would use that shape also. They don't. I would suggest trying a cheap knife with a "rounded" zytel handle like a Kershaw Blackout or the Griptilian 551 side by side with a slab sided folder. Does anyone prefer the feel of a couple of slabs of G10 to the Zytel handle? I think it is also worth noting that the custom versions of the original Wegner design did not have G10 slabs.

Personally I find the Spyderco version very comfortable in my hand. I have dressed Elk, Deer, and too many Hogs to count with the knife. I also have a set of Henkels knives with the type of moulded handels that you describe, and they are also very comfortable. I guess it just boils down to what fits your hand. I am also glad to hear from some people who do not test their hunting blades on cardboard boxes in the office or shrubs in the yard.

Larry at Blade Art notes that he is expecting some Blade-Tech Pro Hunters in G-10 soon. Looks like the best bet is to keep an eye on their web site. They require you to phone order (a little strange these days). He didn't mention pricing.

Blade-techs pro-hunter is scheduled for a review by me sometime the first part of 04.

I have the knife presently, sent by Tim, and have had the spyderco version for several years in my horde as well.

Both are of excellent quality.

I also picked up the moues 2 from Tim and it is my wifes favorite knife now, carried daily. That may not seem like a big deal but I could not get her to carry any knife daily until she put her hands on the Mouse 2.

I actually have another one on order for myself at this time. Everyone who needs a small well built knife thats easy to use and of lockback design should check into these.

Stay safe

Most people know how much I love the Wegner design, so I won't get into it again. But I will say that the Blade-tech version is superior to the older Spyderco version, and that is saying a lot.

Rugerlab1 - I agree with you that they should respond to the e-mail address they have listed. That's their little quirk and no one is perfect. I have dealt with Bladeart many many times and they do provide excellent service. I would suggest trying to give them a call later in the evening. You might be surprised how late you can contact them. The last time I called, it was 9:00pm and received an answer. Or, you can try the "other" forum :D and get their direct e-mail address's there. Yea Dirk, I guess your'e right. My own buisines dos not run so smoothly all the time. I can just be an impatient SOB sometimes. I'll give them a call when I get a chance.

This is slightly off topic, but as far as using slab handled hunters, I haven't had a problem. I've skinned about 50 alpacas, basically miniature llamas, in the past two weeks for a research project. They had some knives there, but I took my own. Most of them were done with a REKAT Pioneer swept point, I'd say at least 30 of them. The other 20 were done with a Spyderco Moran TP and a Spyderco Salsa. All worked just fine, though the REKAT was my preference. If the handle is figured well to fit YOUR hand, I don't think slab handles on a folder are a hinderance.

Absolutly Leroys. If the thing fits your hand, it fits your hand, and it dosen't make a bit of difference if it fits anyone else's hand or not. If it's comfortable to you, go for it.
