blade thickness and top edges

I was hoping to get some info on what goes into selecting blade thickness and type of top edge and what the ramifications are.

I'd like to limit the discussion to ~4" fixed blade knives intended for hunting/survival or fighting/self defense.

most of what I've seen at trade shows etc at this length tends to be 1/8" and 5/32". I've also seen double-edges, false top edges, and no top edge (ie., full blade thickness along top--does this have a "proper name/description"?).

What criteria do makers use to select blade thickness for their knife? I'm assuming it has to do with its intended use. What performance differences exist between false top edge and full blade thickness top--is one top edge better for specific things or is it just appearance/weight that one selects one over the other for?

thanks for any comments you have. I'd also be much obliged if there's an info source on this topic that you can link/direct me to as well.
