I've heard this more than a couple of times. But I have to ask, has anyone ever broken a blade AT the hole? I've heard of Delicas with broken tips, Voyagers with busted clips, Benchmades with a busted omega spring, Gerbers that just fell apart, but I've never heard of anyone breaking a blade at the hole. Anyone?

Interesting question. I think the natural person to ask here would be Cliff Stamp.

If you break one at the hole you are using the wrong tool for the job. Knives are not pry bars, screwdrivers, chisels, or hammers.:)

Yeah, one Spyderco broke while cutting cheese:) It wasn't the Viele, but a discontinued one (cant remember the name.) Spyderco replaced it, free of charge!

It depends on where you stress it. If the blade is locked near the tip it will go there. However if you pry far back on the blade the hole is a *large* weakness as a lot of steel has been removed where the blade is the thickest. I recently broke a AUS-8A Calypro Jr. through the opening hole with very light prying, just using my wrist.

You would have to assume it could be a weak spot, but as BigDeeee said a knife is a cutting instrument and maybe you should be using a beefy fixed blade for more heavy-duty uses.
