Last year we did, on initiative by RogerP:thumbup:, a Bowie of the year contest. Anyone interested in doing it again for this year?

These were the rules from last year:

1) Definition - Flayderman wrote an entire book in search of a definition. There probably isn't one that all will endorse, so I'll try to be as inclusive as possible: a) fixed blade; b) 7" blade length and up; c) must be a custom piece. That's it. Fighters, camp knives and traditional bowies are welcome - as are both forged and stock removal blades.

2) Timing - the knife must have been made in 2007 - or first shown on bladeforums in 2007. No dragging out that perrenial favorite Fogg bowie with the drool-inspiring popcorn stag. Fogg bowies made this year are welcome.

3) Ownership - doesn't matter - can be a knife you made, a knife you own or somebody else's knife all-together. I would particularly encourage makers to show what they feel is the best bowie THEY made this year. This is no time to be shy.

4) Number of entries - as many as you like that meet the above criteria. We'll run this over the holidays to collect as many entries as we can, then narrow it down to a manageable list of finalists that everyone gets to vote on.

You must have read my mind Marcel - coming up later today!

Start pondering your entries.

Roger

The only thing I would change is the qualifying blade length to 6" (or even less) rather than 7". As there's "vest bowies" and such (Harvey Dean's "Huckleberry" for example) that are certainly Bowies with blades shorter than 7".

Glad to see this thread back as not only was it a great thread but generated some other interesting ones as well in the same time period.

In my opinion, 2008 has been a "GREAT" year for bowies.

Marcel,

Does the Bowie have to be made last year in 2007? Can it be made this year 2008?

I believe Marcel just copied Roger's opening post from last year and didn't change 2007 to 2008.
Would kind of be pointless if the same knives presented last year would be presented again this year.

Monkeywrench toss:

There were a LOT of great knives made in 2008. Why only Bowies? How about some other categories.

Bowie
Dagger
Fighter
Tactical folder
Gent's folder
You tell me...

I know, I know, it's endless. And, it adds complexity. But I like variety, too. Hey, we're not a 'one-song charlie'.

let's make 2008 the Year of the Dagger!

COOP, YOU LEFT OUT BEST HUNTER.

Just kidding. ;) :D

I agree with you to some extent as we are already "labeled" a Bowie Forum by some, however spreading it out so broad really increases the complexity of it. I helped Roger with the tally last year and it was very time consuming coming up with the finalist before going to the poll.
I believe our "bowie" designation last year was a little "loose" as fighters, daggers were included, unless I'm mistaken.

Sounds like you are proposing a Blade Forum's "Best Custom Knife of 2008"?

Okay - the best bowie thread is up here:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=607599

Kevin - I backed the blade length down to 6". Nobody is going to get out a ruler - if your blade is 5.5" throw it in. :) Im just trying to avoid the 3 1/2" clip point three finger "bowie" going in.

Coop - I would LOVE to see best dagger, best tactical, best folder etc. - but given the volume last year from just bowies, I think it would be unworkable in one ginormous thread. I am happy to organize concurrent threads or to hand off to someone else to start threads under those headings. My ears are wide open - let me know what you guys think and what you want to see.

Also - while I think dagger and folder are self-explanatory, I'd welcome any input as to how (or whether) we define "tactical".

Roger

I just want to be able to say "I mentioned this." :)

To that end, *I* don't have the time to organize this, so I will objectively stand back. It's not as though there won't be enjoyment from a Big Honkin© Bowie thread.

Thanks. It's shaping up nicely.
