Bladeforums donation in James' name?

If any of you talked to James, you knew how important his "good karma cut" program was to him.

Since Toni has asked that no flowers or such be sent, I would like to propose that we all pitch in and make a donation to a charity that James supported.

To quote his page:
----

In a knife we see the tension between creation and destruction, a universal tool that can be easily mistaken for a weapon. Why not start out your ownership of a new sharp object with a good deed? With orders of $50 or more, you will get the product you bought, along with a check from me, payable to the good cause of your choice, for 10% of the purchase price in a pre-addressed envelope for you to mail. This policy is not pure goodness of my heart, but is partly intended to make up for the fact that some other outfits have such amenities as full time help and regular business hours, and I don't. Pick one of the groups listed below, some of which reflect my outlook and affiliations, some of which are local, and some of which are rather universal, or pick your favorite. "It takes all kinds of people . . . ," so I reserve the right to decide that some outfit is something I want nothing to do with, and suggest an alternative, or refer somebody to one of many more conventional vendors.

American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Amnesty International, Bet Tzedek Legal Services, Catholic Relief Services, Church World Service, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, Human Rights Watch, KCRW (local public radio station), Los Angeles Zoo, National Wildlife Federation, Oxfam America, Reason Foundation, Temple Beth Emet of Burbank (my congregation), United Jewish Appeal

Given James' particular distaste for oppressive regimes and his attempts to boycott products from those nations, I'd nominate Amnesty International.

Maybe Spark can set up a purchase button on 1SKS and we can put in our donations online. Or maybe we can do it the old fashioned way and mail someone the money.

Regardless, we should do it.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes by suggesting this. It's not my forum after all, but I hope this takes off.

Put me down for $20. Maybe more...

Yes. Good idea. Perhaps, Toni Mattis can come with a suggestion in her husband's memory.

Thanks guys...
Let's keep this at the top so everyone sees it over the weekend.

I will be more than glad to defer to Toni's wishes for a charity. Although I'm sure she has a lot to take care of right now, I hope she sees this topic and weighs in.

I'm in 100% agreement with the idea. I think we should have Toni decide what organization to send it to when a bit of time has passed.
My suggestion, with Mike's approval, would be for the members of this forum to send the donations to Mike, and when the time is right, he can forward one sum from BFC to the appropriate cause.

Sounds good to me.

The old Hebrew tradition assigned number values to the letters of the alphabet. The letters het and yud equal 10 and 8 and spell out the word for life, chai, which James used as the name of his company. So we often make charitable contributions in multiples of 18.

I just reread TomMarker's first post in this thread, and I think James himself suggested where any contributions could go: split it up to each of these ...

American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Amnesty International, Bet Tzedek Legal Services, Catholic Relief Services, Church World Service, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, Human Rights Watch, KCRW (local public radio station), Los Angeles Zoo, National Wildlife Federation, Oxfam America, Reason Foundation, Temple Beth Emet of Burbank (my congregation), United Jewish Appeal

I think I can contribute a little bit too.

In Toni Mattis's original post about James' passing on, she stated:

Donations may be made to the charity of your choice or Temple Beth Emet, 600 No. Buena Vista, Burbank, CA 91505.

Sounds like Temple Beth Emet is the place to go.

And I'm in.

hmmm... this hasn't taken off the way I was hoping it was.

why not?

mike/spark? how do you guys feel? wanna give this some official BF backing?
