I started my first season of football this past week. I'm a sophmore in highschool and have never played football before, except for neighborhood and backyard games. It was baseball and basketball for me until now.
Well after 5 days, all I can say is "why didn't I start playing this game a long time ago?". I'd never realized how fun it was until now. I play tackle, o and d. I'm 5'9 and 185, I could be playing LB and fullback but I'm doing okay at tackle. D-tackle is real fun, o-tackle is fun but very complicated. Offensive linemen usually are the smartest guys on the field. I'm a smart guy, but when it comes to getting the plays, I'm slow. But I am learning this stuff.

You all who've played before know the rush you get when you are facing off against a freshman who wants your job. The play starts, you get to your block, who's a freshman but bigger than you. You drive him away from the play, and then you get the urge to pound him. His feet cross and he's disoriented, and then BOOM! You lower your shoulder pad and knock him over. I've always been an aggressive kid and I think I've found my calling.

We have our first scrimmage tomorrow. I can't wait to hit guys that reall are the enemy.

So are there any football players out there?

Just make sure you plant that shoulder firmly into his chest as he hits the ground and keep those feet moving. Makes them think twice about coming back for more. Good Luck and stick 'em!

Talking smack is a very important part of football use it to your advantage.
After all you are better then they are so remind them of it. :D :D :D

We had our first scrimmage today. At first I was a little nervous about the plays and stuff, but coach told us not to worry, if we make a mistake do it at 100 mph. This team we played had no heart. If you hit them once, all their fight was gone. They had no violence in them. We scored 7 tds and they scored 0. Coach was pleased with this so he gave us the afternoon off  .

I played 3 years of varsity football in high school.
I don't talk about it all that much.
I don't want to come off as some glory days jerk.

Bit since you asked, I played center on the O Line. I was fairly small. 5'10", 155lbs soaking wet.
I called all the blocking schemes. It was awesome.

Enjoy it while you can. You can do things on the field that you'd go to jail for if you did it on the street.
I coached O Line for a couple of years at our local high school.
Football is awesome.

The main thing I learned while playing football and other sports in high school was to keep your center of balance low. You'd be surprised how easily you could uproot an opponent if you are just a bit lower than he is when you hit!

And always remember, keep your legs moving (whether it's running at someone or running from someone). :D

Good luck and have fun!

I played Offensive Tackle through middle school and most of High School. Offense is more team oriented than defense. There is more room in defense for great players to cover for the not so good. Offense really has to operate as a unit to get it done. Defense is where the stars can really shine. If you do both well, that's great. Have fun and be safe.

Due to an interesting freshman year "run in" w/ a teacher who was one of the football coaches, I was not 'welcome' to try out for varsity football. Instead, I played "Rec. League" instead. Imagine a team for 16 yr olds that routinely had 21+ year olds that the coaches would sneak in. The whole league did it. This was late '70's & there was no real supervision by the city. Lots of fun. :D

I was a pro-footballer for 5 years - just a different kind of football; the Australian kind. I spent a couple of seasons at the same club as Darren Bennet, who left our game and became the punter for San Diego (I think he's in Minnesota now)

I lived Stateside (Northern California) in '86 & 87 and my work buddies and I would often toss a ball around at lunchtime. They would throw it to me and I would kick it back to them. They were amazed at how I could kick it so accurately of both feet, around the corner, over the shoulder etc - but it's just what one grows up doing I guess :)

One day we were having a kick/throw on a community college and a very overweight coach came running over three fields away to offer me the punters job on his team. I considered it for about 5 seconds before turning him down. My sports career was well behind me and I'm not a huge kick anyway.

Different game, but same principles of combat I suspect. Go in hard and hit them first - throw the doubt into their minds and get them reacting to you.

Keep at it HP - working hard at a collision sport gives you confidence. The world is full of man/boys who's insecurities at never testing their physical courage shows in almost everything they do - you won't be one of them.
