Okay, I just looked at shootist16's bladeforums knife of the year thread and that got me to thinking. It is hard for us to name a knife of the year because it's hard for many of us to handle all of the great and not so great knives that are out there BUT many people have been members here for all or most of this year. I myself have been lurking for probably six monthes and just joined. Over the last six monthes I can think of several memorable threads. So, for those of you who have been here most of the year - "What are the three to five best threads of the year?" - and no they don't have to be restricted to the general forum but if they were on a different forum please note which one.

Ted

PS - by best I mean the threads you most (or maybe even least) enjoyed following, or maybe a thread that significantly changed the way you thought about a particular issue.

PSS - no "what knife would you use in an aardvark (or other animal) threads allowed, LOL

The ones I've had the most fun with are a group of threads you could find with a search for "flying saucer key" and most of all, the Wholly Brotherhood and Cisternity of Voracious Truth FAQ at http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000740.html

This post is not merely the author's opinions; it is the trrrrrruth. This post is intended to cause dissension and unrest and upset people, and ultimately drive them mad. Please do not misinterpret my intentions in posting this.

Can't find the thread, but the thing that has aided me the most since joining is Vampire Gerbils Leatherman Micra Self Defense Course.

Once I mastered the Eye Rolling Technique

, the rest was easy.

Yes! I agree with James. VGs treatise on using the micra as a weapon of self defense has not only changed how I view knives, but how I view life in general. A true epiphany!

For instance, the only blade I now carry is a GI can opener. I see this weapon as the ultimate minimalist neck knife and I've become convinced that Perrin patterned his La Griffe after the standard GI can opener (note they share the almost exact same curvature of the blade). Also, I have little doubt that this weapon played a pivotal role in the Allies' success during WWII. Clearly, it has the "element of surprise" factor cornered. Not to mention that it is also useful for opening cans.

Memorable was the Busse/Emerson and Les Robertson related threads.

Busse Basic rope cutting test was cool.

But you know what's really memorable? The release, discussion, evaluation of knives. Some knives came out and were snatched, some are still snatched. Here's a partial list.

Spyderco Military, Moran, Civilian/Matriarch BF Native
Mission MPU
Apogee
Busse Basic Line
Benchmade Axis, AFCK, Nimravus series
REKAT SIFU, Pioneer and Fang Series
Griffith Sniper
Perrin La Griffe
Emerson Commander
Buck 110
Sebenza
Random Task
Livesay Woo
CRKT folding and Stiff KISS
EDI Genesis

Look thru the archives, you'll see some trends.

There have been a lot of really great threads in the last year. A couple on the art of heat treating blades were sitting in my favorites list for rereading:

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000991.html

But in general there were so many great knife reviews from Cliff Stamp I wouldn't know how to pick a best one. Here is just a random sample:

As a PS, here is a thread that I think still has a potential to be one of the best of the year--please add more:

I would nominate the thread last spring that Chicahiro Ishida started captioned "Bowies". It went to three pages and got hot and heavy for a while, but I know that I learned from it, especially when Jerry Fisk got involved. One result is that I now lust for a Bagwell Hells Belle.

For the General/Blade Discussion Forum I add another vote for the The Absolute FIRST "How To Defend Yourself Using A Leatherman Micra" Webpage is HERE!. He put humor in and the right time when we all needed to ligten up and have a laugh. For the Community Forum just about anything by VG and Bob Irons. But G2's current Your Mama is SOO Fat...... had my sides splitting. For the Political Arena HR's infamous Animal Rights thread for getting me interested in politics and philosophy. Snickersnees followup Objective Reality is a close second. I don't visit the other forums often enough to make a nomination.

There were some threads I checked out about Micarta (I think it was micarta) when I first came here and looked at old stuff. I never got it about the smell but it looked like the participants were having fun. I'll have to see if I can find those again.

I vote for Ken Onion's thread on custom makers using laser cutting and other modern technology.

The Leatherman self defense thread was great.
I also liked "enough about the AFCK".
Joe Talmadges "How to make the Axis perform"
Ken Onions laser cut blade thread.
But my top vote goes to the infamous Mad Dog notch conspiracy thread.

The Leatherman Micra as a defensive weapon deserves honorable mention.

Just about anything dealing with the Sebenza

and the almighty Military

always got my attention.

And recently I have been moving towards fixed blades so have been interested in all CRK FB info, Greco, Allen Blade, Nimravus and the varying steels used in their construction.
