Bladeless Multitools: More Likely Now?

I have been abdicating a bladeless multi-tool for some time now, for a couple of reasons: 1) less hassle on airplanes and federal buildings(little did I know then how big an issue that would be now); 2) since I usually have another, better knife on me (usually 2 or more!); and 3) would rather have another tool in its stead, like an awl on my Pulse or scissors on a Supertool 200.

Do you think that Gerber, Leatherman, et al. will make any tools without knife blades on them as a result of the events of this week an the resultant FAA restrictions?

Do you think they any tools of this type will be forbidden or at least scrutinized, lest someone stab someone with a screwdriver or use his pliers to rewire the plane so it can by flown via a laptop in seat 4G?

I noticed the news last night said "knives and other cutting tools forbidden on airline flights" Do they mean box cutters? Do they mean a large pair of shears that could be used as a weapon? Have they even said?

Just about any tool on a multi-tool could still be used as a weapon.
Take a screwdriver for instance. A stab in the throat or any vital area could take you down if not kill you! Most tools can be dangerous weapons if you have the know how!

BrassKnuckles, you are exactly wrong. The whole idea of legitimate knife use is that a knife is primarily a tool, NOT a weapon. This goes even more for multitools.

Of course, some knives are designed for fighting, but banning inanimate objects is a never-ending quest for a refuge from reality. Do we ban pens, pencils, laptops, hands and feet?

Security is a state of mind. Unless we lock passengers in their seats, banning tiny objects in their pockets is irrelevent.

CD, the first time I read someone suggest a bladeless knife, I mocked the idea. But now I think you're right. No one cares for the blades on a Leatherman, and for my Supertool to have two all-but-useless items is a shame. Thin it down or replace them with something useful.

No I do not feel I am wrong. Pens, pencils, just about anything could be used as a weapon, but tools are more likely to be used because of there makeups. I know a couple of guys that could kill you very easily with their hands and feet!

I suppose there is no sure safe method of being protected from terrorists, if they are trained to kill you, most likely they will!

You beat me to it.Yes the knifeless knife will be made:( . As more places restrick blades you'll see sak's ect with evertything but blades.

C.D. I've been thinking the same thing. But I think there may already be one. I'm IIRC the SOG Paratool was designed so that you could customize it somewhat. They had a couple of optional tool blades that you could use to replace the stock version if you preferred. This means that you can disassemble the tool and remove the knife blades. Obviously you would have to replace them with something to take up the space. I wonder if metal washers would work?

There already is a "bladeless knife." A few years ago, Victorinox came out with a small, Classic-sized knife called the bladeless knife. I think it was essentially a Classic, just without the knife blade. But since I *think* it has a small, tiny scissors, it, too, would be banned because it's a "cutting tool."

I remember at the time, Victorinox was taking some heat from some people for having such a knife in their lineup. IMO it was a smart idea. Unfortunately, I don't think even any bladeless tool would be allowed, period.

Gerber lets you custom build a tool on their website, so I guess you could order one without any knife blades...

There are those small bladeless keychain multitools. Think they`re called Sebertool and Swiss- Tech Tool.

I am guessing utilikeys will be out as well...

I used to use zip ties to secure my zippers on checked baggage, but that will be ahrd t do if the tool I need to open then are inside....

Clay I do the same thing with zip ties. I used to carry on a small pair of side cutting pliers. I guess they will be banned too.

Hell, if SeaTac has its way, all carry-ons, even purses and briefcases, will be prohibited. Given the likelihood of misrouted or pilfered luggage, can you see the portential for disaster from this move?

I'm rather surprised FAA didn't mandate arrival at the airport naked, with some nitwit handing you one of those paper dresses you get at the doctor's office to wear, after presenting your ticket, of course.

I fail to see how destroying liberty defends liberty...I guess I must be stupid. :barf:

I agree we may end up flying naked. Bootlaces make a fine garrote, a belt with a heavy buckle can do significant damage. What about people who need crutches or a cane? They have a hell of a case under the ADA if they won't let them take their cane or crutches on board. Maybe they will assign armed guards to the diasabled. As far a something defensive that you still MAY be allowed to carry on, how about a six or eight inch cast iron frying pan.

Blade-less tools and knives will not do you any good for flying. Last night while watching Dan Rather on CBS, the showed a video clip of a spokes woman for one of the airlines. She was very proudly holding a basket of "stuff" confiscated at a security check point. She was just radiant with delight and beaming how the security was working to keep us safe. In the basket I was able to make out 2 Revlon nail files and a pair of fold up toe nail clippers. I feel safer already.

Some types of nail clippers, do have a folding knife blade and/or nail file. Maybe that`s why they were confiscated.

I looked at GerberBlades.com and at this time, Yes you can
"Custom build" a Model 600 Multi-Tool,
BUT AT BEST YOU WILL HAVE TO SET IT UP WITH TWO Scissors,
OR Scissors, and A SAW!! and NO WAY AROUND A FILE.

As said a bladeless Multi-tool probably wouldn't help you any,
atleast with planes right now, but right know either Gerber, or
Leatherman makes one, so if you want one go buy a cheap one, and
use your gerber to saw the blade off the cheap one:)

God help us all, and Save us from our selfs

I am sure no full size mag lites will be allowed and I am startin to doubt that I will be able to carry my E2!

I think perhaps I will travel via other means, though I am sure that amtrak is going to be bumping up their security as well...
