How good is Sandvik stainless steel? For durability and sharpness, what might you suggest that is better?

What in the world is Valox? Some sort of plastic? How good is that?

I believe that Sandvik makes a large number of alloy steels. The most common one found here in the US is 12c27. It is a decent steel, that handles impact well, takes a good edge, and is quite easy to resharpen. It is not considered a premium steel. Still, it is perfectly serviceable in most of the knives using it.

Sorry, but have never heard of Valox.

Sandvik is the brand name of a Scandinavian company that makes steel, not a type of steel. Sandvik makes all kinds of different types of specialty steels, some appropriate for use in knives and some not. Take care.

Valox is a material similar to kydex. I have a boot knife with Valox scales and sheath. I haven't used it very hard so I can't speak personally for its durability, but it seems pretty tough.

I'm unfamiliar with kydex.

Kydex and Valox are both forms of plastic.
I disagree that Sandvik 12C27 is not a premium steel. My Benchmark hunter has it and it is excellent. Holds an edge, sharpens easily, resists rust. It's all in the heat treat. And yes, Sandvik is the name of a company.
