Just got back from a week at deer camp. Nothing hardcore, stayed in a camper. I did however, build fires with my ferro rod under asst. situations. I did some unofficial chopping tests, and sawed, and split some wood with my little tools. Sadly no deer, or hogs this round. But, will be back in a few weeks for round 2.

1st off, the usual suspects:

A couple of shots of our pine resin burner. A tin can, half full of dry resin chunks, folded over, and pounded down with an axe poll. pop a small hole in the upper section and when heated the resin melts, and the gas burns nicely for about 8-10 minutes, shooting out about 1-3 feet depending on the size of the hole, and amount of resin. No real practical use, but fun, and does throw a lot of light.

Next a few shots of me lighting a chunk of birch bark and some pine knot shavings with my ferro rod. Gathered the bark from what we call a river birch, and/or paper bark birch, and it took off on the 1st strike. I added the pine shavings and had a heck of a fire in no time flat. Funny, to pull bark from a tree literally growing in the river, and it be so flammable, LOL

Next up are some shots of the river I was hunting off of, and some of the surrounding terrain.

I'll post the chopping test, and other stuff in another post.
Enjoy.

William, we have camped there for about 20 yrs. with few exceptions over the years. The area is really a sleeper. If you don't know any better you think it's just a load of clear cuts, and pine plantations. But if you've been there since before it was cut, you know where the real woods still are, and a 5 minute boat ride, or 15 minute hike gets you into nice hardwood flats, and/or great fishing as well.

The Tonka is property of the 4 yr. old nephew. He nearly wore out a folding camp shovel loading it with dirt, gravel and rocks all week.

Nice photos, looks like a great area. Good to see you enjoying it with the little ones.
Thanks for sharing the photos.
