I just received a copy of this book and it has already shed a lot of light on the specifics of the various Buck fixed and folding knives. There are three sections on Buck knives....one for fixed blade models, one for folding models and a third that looks at the private collection of Larry Oden. All are full of great information. Great work Larry! ;)

When I thumbed through one of these at a store, at first glance it seemd to be just a renamed Levine's 5th edition, have they added more Buck stuff over what's in Levine's 5th?

If I'm correct, the 5th addition of Levines was several years old, and since I don't have it, I just ordered this one since it was published in 2005. I assume the values have been updated, but there's no way for me to tell unless I have Levines in front of me. It also has the date stamps for all years through 2006.

It is my understanding that the info in this book on BUCK knives is the most up-to-date info available in print. A good portion, if not all, the work was contributed by a couple guys very close to the source who truly know BUCK, the company and the knives. There was a lot of research and work done to make the sections specifically on BUCK much improved and expanded over what was in the older books and to a BUCK collectr, that alone makes the book worth buying.

As I really don't have much interest in any knives other than BUCK, I can't speak on any of the other chapters.

"Blades Guide" is the most extensive compilation of Buck information available to date. Everything from "Levines 5th" and more.

Cool, sounds like they added more that might make it time to add another book to the library at home!

Got Mine from Larry. Problem is, wife started looking at it and I haven't seen it since. Last glimpse I had of it, there were stickies on about half the pages. She has gone through all my knives and is working on the old kitchen knives now.

She figured out that we have a fairly rare Gerber Shorty, and a WWI German trench knife. Trench knife goes back to 1915-1918

Great Book.

You're a lucky guy LFH...My wife looks at my knives and can't see a bit of difference between a Buck 531 and the beater Imperial that I use to open paint cans...LOL...

You open paint cans with a knife???

I guess you didn't see that short story on CNN/HN a week or two ago about the kid raking leaves...and the knife nailed him between the eyes... :barf: Wonderful x-rays and photos of the knife sticking out of his skull...he seemed OK after the surgery...

:o ...Yeah...I tried using it to cut rope , then open envelopes...it would'nt do either well...so I put it to use where it finally worked...:D  :D

My wife normally rolls her eyes  when I start talking knives. (of course I explain to her that it could be some other extra curricular activity and that usually changes her tune)  I finally got her a Buck 373 with mother of pearl scales for her to carry in her purse and now she's happy! :D :D

You know, I saw that story on TV also and for the life of me, I can't see how raking leaves would generate enough force to flip a pocketknife up into the air and bury it in a human skull, when I saw that story, I admit my first thought was "somebody is not telling what really happened".
