I was looking at replacement blades for my branch lopper
& was suddenly aware that with a bit of filing
these might make dandy neck/utility knives
around the house or elsewhere.
Could even add-on a handle.

Here's 4 different patterns:

Cool idea, Dean. Do you think the steel is suitable for a good utility knife? Did you buy it for your loppers or for a kydex neck sheath? ;)

yes, hmmmmmmm.

I seem to remember that Yvsa mentioned making a knife from a set of hand-pruners.

So I don't see why not--but if they are really nicely hardened, I'd think power tools would be needed. Seems a lot of work to thin down and get to a symmetical grind. So many cheap, thick blades with moderately hardened steel are readily available.

Wonder if one can find out what steel they are made of? Anealing, thoroughly regrinding, and hardening back to desired hardness, maybe differentially, would be cool.

Some of those have pretty nice shapes.

I was thinking it might be neat to anneal one in the forge and see what could be done with it.

The one in the lower left looks ready to go. A bevel on one side just makes it cut different -- still good for utility work.

Says "hardened steel"
"teflon coated"

The one for my anvil loppers
will scratch the body of my Villager BGRS
using some pressure,
but skates over the hardened areas.
So I'd -guess- in the 'usual' factory knife range ~52~56

So should be easy enough to work with good files
or a grinding wheel.
BTW, my blade with the copper anvil cost <$4.
'Grip' is slightly short,
but a couple of spots ground down would
fit my hand nicely.
But then cheap knives are always available just about everwhere.

This is a very neat Idea.. I think im heading up to ACE and picking up #1 (upper left) to see what I can do with it..

Thanks for the easy knife making tip.
