Bladesmith anvil?

I've asked this question before, but I thought I'd give it anouther go.

I'm looking for a square hunk of hardable steel, like the Japenease bladesmith's anvil, no need for a hardy hole, horn or foot, will be used just for hammering to shape. I've got a piece of mild steel, but it's battered up and has no rebound.

I've looked all over down south and nobody seams to have anything in the size I'm after.

I'm looking for about 5" wide by 10-12" long by about 10" high and preferably made out of 1050 carbon steel that I can harden fairly easily.

I had thought of getting a harbor freight cast steel anvil and cutting the horn off and heat treating but it seams they no longer carry the 100 pounder.

The other option is to mill down a piece of rail road track and heat treat and weld plates to the sides and fill with lead. A lot of work for something that's not quite what I'm after.

There was a fellow at Blade show in Atlanta that had a custom cast anvil that would fit the bill nicly, but I couldn't afford it at the time. It had two legs and was painted bright red and was square with no horn or heal and had a hardy hole. Anyone know him? Wish I'd gotten a buisness card.

Thanks,

Will

Will, check out your local driller, the guys who drill caisons for buildings, bridges, etc.
The piece of the rig they call a Kelly bar makes a good anvil. Mine is 8x8 y about11 inches and they told me it was 4140 steel. They are always cutting them to length for different applications. I use mine as much or more than my HayBudden. bruce

Thanks, I would like to find a piece of a Kelly bar, but the drillings gone out of this area and there's nothing like that offshore where I've been, even on the 30 year old jack up I used to work on.

Hey. There's a man in Mantachie that sells anvils. He advertises them as made by King of California, and they are supposed to be hardened. He gets $70 for a 55#, and $125 for a 110#. Maybe worth looking into. Name is Terry Jones at mattdix@network-one.com
