Bladesmith near green bay wisconsin???

i want to apprentice or watch or be taught how to become a bladesmith!
anyone near the green bay, wisconsin area that could teach me their trade?
i would help out in exchange for knowledge on bladesmithing.
any direction in my quest would be great!

Go Packers, indeed!

Look on the Knifemaker's Guild and ABS websites for a maker near you. Also check in knife magazines. Knives Annual has a big list of makers in the back of every edition as well.

I commend you for filling out your profile and looking to learn from someone closeby. That's a great way to start.

So you're a sushi chef eh? What do you look for in your working knives?
 
I would take you up on that but I am so busy that I don't hardly have time to work in my shop. I am ,more or less, self tought though, so I may be a bad influince anyway. lol. I would say build a forge and get some steel and start hammering. :)
 
what would be the basic things i need to start on my own?
forge? belt sander? anvil? hammer? tongs?
what else am i looking at for starting out?
i know there is A LOT of info on this site. almost to much to sort through.
and you guys probably hate n00b questions.
but could someone point me in the right direction to start my bladesmithing career. step by step directions would be awesome!!!! :eek:

The $50 knife Shop
It confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary; you can just file and grind to create a knife (stock removal)

The goop quench is total Bull, commercial quench oils are available, even grocery store canola oil works much better.

Junkyard steels require skill and experience to identify the steel and heat treat it properly.
You can buy proper steel like 1084FG from Aldo very cheaply.

I like cable damascus, but that advanced project has no place in a beginners book.

The home built grinders are the best thing about this book, but there is now a huge amount of info for 2x72” belt grinders on the web, including free plans.

Steel
The “welding steel” at Home Depot / Lowes… is useless for knives.
If you send out for heat treating, you can use O1, A2, D2, CM154, ATS34, s30v, 440C, plus many others.

If you heat treat yourself, find some 1070, 1080, 1084,
1084 FG sold by Aldo Bruno is formulated just for knifemaking.

Heat Treating
