Im just diving into the knife making hobby and I think I would really benefit from a visit to a knife shop. Anyone around my area that wouldnt mind me stopping by for a very short visit would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to get a better idea of the process and equipment I need to acquire. Im a hands on learner and books and youtube videos can only teach you so much.

Let me know!

Check out the metal museum, if you're into forging. I spent a good bit of time there in the 90's. I think forging on the river is coming up soon. There are a few makers and a bunch of blacksmiths in the Memphis area.

I live near Memphis but I'm probably not what you are looking for. Very novice. I'm actually taking a class at the Metal Museum next month Don, Blacksmithing I or something. Pretty excited.

I'm not a smith, I'm a cutler. I'm in Collierville.
If you go to my web site, www.billdeshivs.com there are shop pictures.
You can contact me with questions

Bill, your embellisments are extrordinary. I do have a question, i have never been able to draw on paper or paint. I just never had the talent for it. Is engraving similar to drawing or will i be able to learn how with patience practice and more patience? Im doing some filework right now and it turned out better than i ever thought i was capable of so maybe metalwork is different than pen and paper?

here is the filework, just a simple vine pattern

You don't have to be an artist to engrave, but you do have to have a vision of what you want, and the ability to draw it where you want it.
I do a lot of erasing.
Thank you for the kind words.

They used to have some very good knife making classes, engraving and damascus demos there. Phil Baldwin, Darrel Myer to name a couple. I've been out of touch for a number of years though. Forging on the River is coming up soon. Damascus and blacksmithing demos, good times.
