I just received an interesting item in the mail from my friend Eric Blair. As I picked it out of the packaging, I thought…cool, this could put your eye out. Eric calls it his Brain Spike...appropriate. It’s designed to be used when more conventional tools for defending yourself are not available.

The Spike is made out of carbon fiber and nylon, which gives it good strength in a light- weight format. Mine was the smaller version that’s 3/8 in. in diameter and 5 ¾ in. long overall. The first 3 in. of the spike is ground in a sharply pointed, triangular shape to give good penetration. Above the triangular blade section, there’s a finger groove that provides an assist in gripping it in either saber or reverse.

It surprised my wife when I handed it to her. She said, “What’s it for? It doesn’t look very sharp…ouch.” First blood.

It’s also handy around the office. With the clip attached, it fits in shirt or jacket pocket and doubles as a stylus for my PDA.

BTW, Eric is also making a larger version from 7 in. long, 5/8 in. diameter rod that I’m going to be checking out. It will probably be carried in a stealthy sheath. Check’em out.

I have an almost identical one, that I bought years ago. I think it's made by the same company that made those "CIA" letter openers.

I actually met a missionary that carried one all the time, because he flew so much, and never had any trouble getting it through metal detectors.

Yup..Very cool....

I couldn't tell which was the spike and which was the pen...

The only problem I'd have with it is that I don't wear a pocket protector,, nor do I get dressed up with even anything clse to a button up shirt...

When I get dressed up it's usually a clean pair of jeans and a clean Busse Combat or my Microtech shirt..LOL

Most of the time my wife can't get me out of Advantage camo..:)

A neck rig for that sucker would be cool!!

Eric shoot me an e-mail:)

ttyle

Eric...

 Please, let me know if these are made generally available. For the right price, I'll take at least one or two.

Very nice,b ut I am not sure if that would be legal in Canada. We are not allowed to own knives that are disguised as something else. Sword canes, belt buckle knives and knives that look like pens are outlawed. I am not sure that this knife would fall under the classification of being a knife disguised as a pen.

Hey guys,

Eric just updated his computer and has not been able to get over to this thread. He tells me he'll be back up and running this afternoon/evening . . . Bill Gates and Windows XP willing.

Hey !! Where is my brain spike? :) A few weeks ag he said he was going to make some more and I could buy one, great pic but now I really want one :(

yeah, How much .. and wondering if it falls into knife category. When you say it is sharp, does it have a decent edge or just the point?

Using it for your PDA won't hurt the point?

Hey, that's cool! Of course, it's illegal in Denmark where you can't carry anything that is a knife or weapon in "disguise"!
One hand openers are illegal too, as are folders with blades over 2,5" and fixed blades over 4,7" - the latter are illegal to carry in public places as well!

Probably won't take long before we can't carry a tiepin in public places!:-)

Take care
Bo

I'm sold. If this thread gets lost, please post a new one when you have info on how to get one.

Thanks,

-Al-

The spike that I received was designed for penetration so the point was sharpened. It would not suprise me that the edge could also be sharpened.

I've only had it for a few days and haven't seen any degradation of it's penetrating capability by using it a few times on my PDA. (If someone asks, it's a stylus) I'll update you as I get more experience with it.

Hopefully, Eric will be on-line soon and explain more about options, sheaths/clips, prices, etc.
