Which would be best for folders? I'm talking about ATS34 bar stock. I can get it either way. The blanchard ground is alot more money, I bought it for my first bar of steel thinking it was supposed to be flatter and straighter. Now that I've got to working on it though I figured it may not be that big a deal when I'm working without a mill or lathe, and my drill press wobbles like a cow on skis. I'll be taking care of that problem as soon as I can.
So am I better off using the blanchard ground? Or is the fact that the hot rolled still has the black skin on it that eats grinding belts the only difference? Thanks

go with the blanchard ground stuff....and hopefully the scratches arent too deep... getting it ground on a surface grinder is the best thing.......but raw barstock is not the best to start with when making folders.

No one has mentioned precision ground bar stock. It has a finer surface finish than the blanchard and is only a few dollars more. It is an excellent base to start folder blades from.

I can not remember if its K&G or Koval I buy ats-34 precision ground from. It is one of the two....

I seem to recall a comment in an old thread that mentioned that the black skin could be removed by soaking in vinegar overnight. I could be wrong, and I haven't tried it yet. In fact, I kind of like it, as it gives me a good reference for my grinds. In other words, the contrast allows me to monitor the straighness of my primary grind very easily while I'm doing it, but I suppose a permanent marker could do just as good a job without the added hassle...

Oh well, I'm just a 'ginner and I don't know much yet so I need all the help I can get...

Thanks guys
I'll stick with the blanchard ground stuff. The scratches aren't to bad.
