I purchased one of the BK2 blanks from Ebay and now it is time to be sharpened. How was the factory edge applied? What is the best course of action for the average guy to get a near factory edge??

I am now on the prowl for a Camillus/BK7 ...... anyone want to buy some Victorinox knives???????????

Best,

Webbdad

Get a cheapo 1" x 30" belt sander and read Jerry Hossom's tutorial. Best done with a dust collector and while wearing safety glasses and a respirator, but one of the easiest ways to match or exceed a factory edge without going insane or getting addicted to every sharpening stone on the market.

Hey Webddad......

Listen to brother Thom......220 grit will give you a nice aggressive "factory"edge......
Jerry"Cousin Roadkill" Hossom do know how to put an edge on a blade !!!.....Jerry Fisk and Murray Carter are also Masters of the Society of Scary Sharp and have DVD's available....

All Best...

Stop picking on me, Ethan!! :D

You really don't need a mask or dust collector with that small 1 x 30 sander. Just put a wet spong at the bottom of the belt. It will catch your dust and make clean-up a breeze. Glasses are always a good idea when working around machinery, especially if you're Ethan's age... ;)

After my wife found all of the steel dust that went behind things and clung to the walls (and looked like black mold), I'm a big fan of playing it safe.

Hey Cousin...

Picking on my elders is soooo satisfying to the soul !!!!.....Welcome....Am I going to see you at SHOT Show ?....I certainly hope so.....

All Best....

Hey Cousin...
Only if you promise to be properly deferential and otherwise behave in a civil manner...

Oh dear, and I had such high hopes for you, Cousin......I WILL spring for a cup of coffee....... good behavior or not.....

Also, may I suggest for those of you who DO go this route, that you invest a couple dollars in a ceramic belt or two for that sander. Will make the process MUCH faster.

I'm glad you guys bumped this, I was looking for a place to get some new belts and there are some good links on that page. Hell of a lot cheaper than what lowes wanted for one. More options as far as grit goes as well.
