I know some guys on here carry blanket rolls instead of backpacks and I was wondering how you guys do your total load out with blanket roll, possibles pouch, etc. How do you carry food and water, wrapped in the blanket? Pics would be great. I'm kinda in the place where I recognize how well backpacks work for me I just don't like wearing them.

Also, do you get funny looks from people on the trail? :)

I get funny looks from people anyway. You're climbing that? with that thing on your back? Are you crazy? For how long? a WEEK!? Working on my primative kit now, I need to find some solid 2 inch leather belts for making the baldric/bandoleer/belt rig for carrying my stuff, but right now I carry two wool 4 pound blankets that I picked up new in wrapper from a grocery store (they're like 2 inches thick...) with a canvas tarp I got at costco for 7 bucks. The local Army Navy store has leather marbles style bags for 5 bucks a pop, so I picked up four of those, and I bought some elkhide scrap and a leather punch for stitching together a knapsack. Should make a decent nessmuk kit when all is said and done but like I said the hardest part is finding two quality 2 inch leather belts that don't cost 70 bucks apiece.

Good place to start is by googling Mark Baker or tumpline and start reading. Baker's books, A Pilgrims Journey 1 and 2 are fantastic sources of information. Chris

Bought two at wally world very decently priced. They were pretty crappy the way they came, dry and stiff, but I put them in a big ziplock overnight doused with neatsfoot and they came out nice. Solid leather, no stitching and a little more than 10 bucks a piece. Chris

thanks, will check them out. the one that is around my ass right now is perfect, I picked it up at American Eagle for 15 dollars-simple sturdy brass buckle and this leather has taken five years of constant abuse, still looks gorgeous. Unfortunately everything I've found even remotely like it is 5-10 times more.

I use a blanket roll in warme rweather (April -october) Just a wool blanket wrapped in my tarp or poncho..I keep minimal key pieces of kit in there that I won;t need till I'm ready to make camp..(coffee, Chopper, etc) too much will make the rol to buly to be efficient..
the rest of my kit fits into a buttpack.it;s nice becaise it keeps minimal strain on my neck and upper back.

I tried to make a traditional blanket roll with a canvas tarp with a simple rope strap. The problem arose when I discovered that most outdoor tarps have an impregnated water repellent chemical of some sort.

So... I soaked it in about 3-4 changes of soapy hot water. It got most of it out ( it kinda stinks ) , but not all of it, even with heavy scrubbing. If I was to do it again, I'd buy a canvas that is not treated. These seem difficult to find here. I also heard that the chemical used in most canvas tarps is a fire retardent. Not a pleasant smell to sleep by.
