2007 wasn't a hundred years ago or anything, but it's long enough back that some may not have been around to see this knife the first time around, and others who were might not mind a second look.

The knife is question is the Bladeforums Benefit Bowie - a collaborative piece by Jerry Fisk, Russ Andrews, Burt Foster and Dan Farr. It is - for reasons discussed below - simply one of my all-time favourite bowies, and one that I have kept in mind as a must-have piece if it ever became availabe. It did, and thanks to my buddy Jon Klein for brokering the deal, I managed to pick it up earlier this year.

Just be way of recap for those that missed it the first time, this knife started out as a pure design exercise run by forumite Stephen Foster. All the various elements of knife design - blade shape, fittings, handle - were presented in a series of images depicting several choices with the membership at large voting in a series of threads until a final design was arrived at.

The knife moved from concept to reality within the context of having it made both as a collaborative work, and as a charitable fundraiser. In this case, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation was the selected beneficiary.

The thread announcing the completion of the knife and the commencement of the fundraising can be found here:

And here's another look at the knife:

Jerry forged the blade, Dan ground and heat-treated it, Russ did the fittings and handle and Burt did the sheath and final blade finish / sharpening. Beyond the makers, a number of others contributed time and talent to bringing the project forward, including photographers and fellow collectors.

One of the aspects of the project that made a lasting impression on me was the fact that Jerry forged out not one, but two big honkin' blades, as the project turnaround was super fast and a backup was valuable insurance in case of mishap. Dan fully ground and heat-treated that backup blade as well, but the primary blade was completed without a hitch. The backup now presents as an enduring artifact of the project knife at an earlier stage of completion.

So why is this one of my favourite bowies?

1) Just standing on it's own, it's a kickass knife.

2) As a design exercise, it is a unique product of the collective input of the forum membership. One would have to say it is almost suprisingly successful in this regard - we've all heard the line that goes ' a donkey is a horse designed by committee'. Occasionally, the committe does good - as they did here.

3) The makers involved - all good guys - all makers I have worked with before - and all managing to create a piece that stands on its own merit.

4) Maybe most of all - the knife itself is symbolic of good people working together to do a good thing for a worthy cause.

Anyway, that's enough rambling - I'll leave you with some better looks at the knife:

Congrats, Roger!
One of my favorites as well.
I even emailed Jon once or twice about that one.

Beautiful knife - great cause!
Thanks for sharing.

Roger, I see now why you are so stoked on this knife! I checked out the link after we talked, but it means so much more now that I know you have the knife. Don't know why, but I guess knowing you have it fills me with gladness. I've always had major respect for your taste in knives, and a green eye for your collection:thumbup:.

Huge congratulations, that is a knife of a lifetime! (but if it's not, please let me know;))

Congrat's Roger, that's a beautiful knife. Who's got the spare blade?

This knife really "flows" so all around its a great looking piece. Just a great shape and design. And the finish appears excellent. Congrats on getting something you REALLY wanted all along.

Oh My .. really like this particular Bowie very very much
I purchased the raffles tickets few times hoping that I could be lucky enough to win it by doing that :)
Congrats to you pal for being chosen as the current custodian of the BladeForums Bowie 2007
And remember pal, you just let me know whenever you feel rather tired taking care of it any longer :o
Someone I know in the other side of the globe really don't mind to take his turn to be the next custodian of the Bowie :D

This benefit project was actually the parent of our CKCA Cancer Research Benefit Collaborative knife projects. We skipped 2008 (the year the CKCA was founded) and have done one every year since, benefitting Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Lung Cancer and of course this year Gastric/Esophagus Cancer research.

You should all be proud as our total contributions (so far) for the four projects have totaled $30,442.22 for cancer research. Not bad, for our custom knife community and cancer research.

Two of the four projects have made the cover of BLADE Magazine's BLADE Show issues:

Roger, I remember the concept and the knife very well. It is one of my favorites. The committee work gelled on this project, for sure! As did the makers. Congrats of ending up with this special fixed blade.

Wow! 4 years. I send Jerry the big hunk of W2 for this project is it really shocked me that it was that long ago and I haven't gotten much better. LOL That is a great knife.

Every single thing a bowie should be, no fluff. Or as I like to say "All Killer, No Filler." A beautiful package.

what a great way to produce great work... very cool. Congrats on your new acquisition Roger...

Such a cool project. Glad you managed to make it part of your collection, man!

Thanks very much gents. Robb - the backup blade has now joined the project knife - I'll get a display case to house them side-by-side at some point down the road.

Roger

Congrats, Roger !
Can't begin to tell you how much I like this already historic piece.

Doug

This forum is remarkable. The best I've ever been a part of. Every day my jaws drops closer to the floor.

Wonderful knife and story, Roger. This is a custom knife project that went beyond success to reach significance.
