Should I go with the Flat grind or the Scandi grind on the Blind Horse BushCrafter? What are the pros & cons? Thanks.

What are you going to be doing with it? Personally I prefer flat grinds. I have seen others carve spoons and other implements without trouble, with a flat ground blade. Another project to attempt this year .

The principle "pro" of a scandi grind is that it's very easy to sharpen for just about everybody, at least in terms of getting the angle right, because you just lay the bevel down flat on the stone and go to it (of course, this is try of ANY edge, but with a narrower traditional edge it takes more practice to keep it down flat than when there's a 1/4" or more of steel laying on the stone like with a scandi) and also, it can aid carving as again the wide bevel makes it easier to see what you're doing in cutting a specific angle.

The downside is that, ease of maintaining the angle aside, it takes a good deal longer to sharpen a scandi grind than it does a traditional flat with a secondary bevel because you have a very large surface area to remove steel from if you're keeping your bevel consistent.

i have a BHK scandi bushcrafter enroute to me, as we type/speak.. i worked out a trade from a fellow BF member.. i'm stoked, i have wanted to check one out for a long time.. i'll let you know how it goes after it arrives..

If you will mainly using it for wood carving then the Scandi is probably the way to go. But I prefer flat ground blades myself. Either way it is one heck of a great knife, I love mine and use it quite a bit. Here's a pic for fun :)

Thanks for the replies. I plan on using it for general outdoor/utility use. I'll get the flat grind.

I like the flat grind. I think the scandi is a better slicer, and really bites into the wood, but I like the idea of a bit more metal at the edge (although I really have no basis whatsoever to worry about the Scandi grind chipping. I own a few and they have never let me down). Either one from BHK will be a winner.

If you are used to flat then stick to it. If you picked up scandidomonoas from a drinking water fountain next to the girls changing room, then you should probably stick with that grind.

Diagnosis - obsessive compulsive desire to make feather sticks = scandidomonoas. Possible misdiagnosis = Mona. Therapy: Three shots of penicillin, lots of rest and some kind of device that allows you to keep a steady 20 degree sharpening angle.

I bought the flat grind with thinner micarta handles. Definately one of the best knives I own. It's almost a Kephart-style knife that I really love. Flat grind is strong , simple, and easy to sharpen . I'm really liking this knife a lot. The scandi version wouldn't be bad either .

i have the scandi grind bhk bushcrafter. i love it but then again maybe it's because it's different from the other knives i already own. pro's - ease of sharpening and bites deep into wood as already mentioned by t1mpani...maybe you should put off buying a bhk and buy a mora first..,for $10-20, get to know the pro's and con's of a scandi first hand (i assume you already have plenty of v-grind knives to begin wtih) and then decide if spending $100 or more is really worth it.

I haven't been around here for a while, and man, this place has changed... The correct response to your question is the simplest. Get both. Geez. :)

I prefer the flat grind myself. Have a couple of Scandi's and they are alright but if given the choice I'll take flat anytime.

Great choice on the Bushcrafter. It is one of my favorite blades!

I have the older blued style, with the tiger maple handles, just like Liveitloud's. I find the flat grind with convex bevel does about all I need it to. I have some scandi-ground Moras, and like them too. I don't see much difference, but I'm not doing a lot of detail carving either.

LOL. I might get the Scandi grind in the future...probably the small Pathfinder model.
