Blood Groove or no Blood Groove? - I hate Pitbulls

This evening I was thanking my lucky stars that my EDC is a Boker EFD. After work I parked across from the bank to withdraw some money so I could pick up a copy of "Gute Fahrt" with the driving test of the new Volkswagen Scirocco. After getting money out of the ATM I walked across the street to the corner of the adjacent parking lot where I had parked my 1993 VW Corrado VR6.

I notice that a raised pick up truck had parked to the right of my car. and the windows where down with a light brown dog leaning a third of its body out the window ready to spring. When I get closer I see that the dog is a pit bull :mad::eek: I immediately draw my Boker EFD and flip the blade open. It was good timing on my part because a second after liner lock locked my blad into the locked position, the pit bull had jumped towards me. I slashed out at the jumping pit bull and then thrusted the blade home (I guess all my foil fencing finally paid off). I don't know if the Pitbull died from the wounds inflicted (don't really care either), because after that the adrenaline was pumping and I just wanted to get the hell out of there so I unlocked my lowered Corrado, shifted into gear and drove off.

I used to work with the US Customs at a custom brokerage firm right by Port of Los Angeles in Wilmington, CA. While I worked there I eventually started carrying an XL bowie knife on my belt on the walks I took over my breaks. I carried it because the neighborhood was 100 percent mexican, with drugees and crazies, not to mention that in a block radius there were 3 pit bulls. Never once in the 3 months I worked there did I ever have to use that Bowie knife and only once was I startled by a pit bull who jumped up and lunged in the direction of my throat.

Thank you Boker for keeping me safe! I'll repay you by being a Boker Solingen return customer.

I notice that there are Blood Grooves on the AFD and none on the EFD. Did Dietmar Pohl put them on the AFD for show or do they really help when retracting the dagger after inflicting a stab wound?

heh heh, couldn't have done that. The interntional press store I was going to closed at 6pm, it was already 5:30pm and the driver/owner of the truck was not there... I just don't understand why people keep pitbulls as pets when these dogs where specifically bred to kill. Just knowing that these dogs have "lock jaw" makes me uneasy.

Although I disagree with you about all pitbulls (or any other dog breed) being inherently dangerous, I would have done exactly the same thing in your shoes, and hopefully with similarly successful results. Now to my main point, what are you doing driving around in my dream car, when you so openly fantasize about a much younger model? Clearly, the only appropriate action is for you to sell me the Corrado, so that you can apply the funds toward your Scirocco purchase. Seriously, though, I wish the new Scirocco was more like my '84 16V which suffered an untimely demise. Oh, right, this is a knife forum. I cannot speak for Mr. Pohl, but in my opinion, blood grooves are about 83% cosmetic, and 9% function, with the remaining 8% shrouded in mystery. Do you feel that your thrust retrieval (there must be a word for that) left something to be desired?

Given I obviously don't go around stabbing living organisms every day (bar cleaning trout while fishing) I can not compare. I didn't notice having a problem retracting the knife. I'm just curious... I know my WWII Alcoso Solingen bayonett has a blood groove on it.

Uh, allright, make me an offer and I might think it over. The car was originally sold at a VW dealer in Wichita Falls, Texas, back in '93 to a young Luftwaffe pilot who was training with the US Air Force. He took it back with him to Germany when the training was over and then years later, when he returned, this time with his family, to the States, he sold it to the second owner who had it for only 6 months. I'm the 3rd owner and it has 133,700 miles on it, 30k of which I put on. I live in Southern California. I've had the car since spring break
'03 and wasn't really ever considering selling it ;)

However I may put in for a transfer to Germany with my company some time in the near future. With the taxes you pay for larger engines and fees it may not be financially logical to take it along. :(

It's not the breed but how you raise your dogs, just like children (you might disagree on this comparision) If you wanted so, you could train your pink puddle into a fierce creature that scares off a Tasmanian devil.

About the blood grooves, IMHO the funtional part is meant to reduce weight rather than prevent the mythical suction that might occure when pulling the blade out of the flesh. Aesthetically, it's up to the designer and owner/user.

It's indeed a brave and justified SD action you have undertaken when the pittbull was coming at you, but I'd have stayed and handled the mess with the owner, possible LEO and loads of paper work(I know, easier said than done) or at least leave a note. When the occasion arises, i.e. a freaked out dog trying to attack me or any other inoccent bystander, I won't hesitate a single second to pull my blade and send it to puppy heaven. Hopefully I will be the one to show pitty rather than be pittied.

"Blood grooves" is a merely marketing term for the more boring real name "fuller". They have nothing to do with suction or anything else. Adding a fuller was a technique used by forgers to to make a larger blade with less material and still make it stiff enough to function as a blade. Nowadays they are added for aesthetics mostly as Man of Iron has already said.

I'm sorry I read this thread. I should have waited until the comic book version came out. I'm going to leave it here. The folks in Prac Tac deserve a break, too, sometimes. :(

lol, if you wait long enough, there will be a Hollywood All Star movie loosely based on this true story, although heavily dramatized, including underlying love/hate relation between TG and the pittbull. Eventually DVD release with director's cut, narrative voice by Sean Connery(who does the voice of the puppy), and last but not least the bloopers scenes.

Hey Tactical German,
Great story! Are you familiar with a magazine here in the US called "Tactical Knives"? Every issue contains a section titled "It Happened To Me". Here, a reader recounts how their knife saved or helped save his or her life in a dangerous situation. The following is from the magazine itself:
"Tactical Knives pays its standard column rate for the 'It Happened To Me' stories it publishes. If you have one you would like to share with our readers, please send it to
Tactical Knives, P.O. Box 538, Castle Rock, WA 98611"

Your story sounds like an excellent candidate indeed for this column!

Great suggestion Wayne!

Actually, I think this is one of those cases when you really need a knife. In the UK, criminals carry knives and many people keep killer dogs. When they attack and kill defenceless little babies (see news) nothing arises in terms of law and regulation (yes, in the UK it's ok for children to be eaten by dogs but it's not ok to carry a knife). But now, if you are caught with a knife you are going to jail andw e are now at the mercy of the police AND the criminals.

I think the survival story is a great example of why you might need a knife in certain contexts!

I used to carry a Leatherman Charge XTi for precisely these situations. Now I don't.

Interesting site:

To the OP: Where did you strike the dog, how many times, and what was the reaction of the dog after the first strike? I'm interested to know how quickly a dog realises that his guts a dragging on the floor and how much effort is required to repel the dog.

the nature of the dog is to be aggressive, i had two of them and they lick you to death but they had an aggressive edge at times , is 90% how the owner raise the dog . a lot of people have them to intimidate because people are afraid , those dogs pick up on it and when somebody looks at them with that fear it triggers that aggressive side, i used to tell people mine was half lab and they ease off but he could sense when he was being stereotyped, i never had a problem besides a couple of soccer balls being puncture but yes they do have a history that one can not deny.
tacticalgerman, did the dog get to do any damage, bite or scratches????

Good Food, good training and love and kindness. My wife tells me that recipe works for people too. ;)

Correct bringing up of a dog is very important. But -can- you full tame and domesticate a lion? Only to a certain extent. It still retains its wildness and can attack at any time! Same is with the pitbull I think.

Hey guys,
How about we keep this on the topic of knives, and not be talking about baby eating dogs, and entrails, ok.
Thanks, Terry
