Yesterday i had a look at the MOD Website (unfortunatly i'm a student and i can't afford those little jewels). I saw in the Lady Hawk's specifications the expression "blood vents"
Does anyone know what it means and its utility???

I believe the more popular name is "Fuller" or "Groove" As to there versatility check past threads about them and you will glean more then enough info to judge for yourself.

Blood vents are more known as fullers.
Fullers aren't meant to allow blood flowing, nor they are meant to avoid a blade remains stuck in a wound (this is another hoax), nor they make a blade stiffer.
A blade is as stiif as its cross section and materials will allow.
Fullers serve essentially two purposes: they make the blade lighter without detracting to its original stiffness (as thinning the whole blade would do) as they work the same way a C beam does, (but they DON'T make it stiffer than it could be without removing any material) and they lessen the chance of warping a longer blade (such as that of a sword) during heat treating.

Blood 'vent' must be similar to the ol' blood groove concept. It is marketing hype for the most part, although it has some virtues in really big blades by lightening the blade while retaining strength. I agree with everything Alrion and Strider said about this often misunderstood or misconstrued knife construction.

You may enjoy these earlier threads:

'grooves' on the side of blades

and this older one which I had some fun with:

What are Blood Grooves for?

They're groovy, man!

The older Marbles knives had wide fullers, which allowed the knife be sharpened like a Straight razor. These were copied by makers, but not in the right configuration. On longer blades, they serve to lighten the blade.

HTH:)!!!

Everything stated earlier in this thread covers the functionality of fullers very well. I would like to add though that I really like the way a fuller looks on a lot of knives. I think in many cases a fuller adds a real nice touch.

I agree Keith,
The addition of a fuller can make a rather plain blade a bit more handsome, even though their just "eye candy". :)

Yep, those were the ones I was thinking about as I posted:D. I only wish they made them in a six inch version:( .

Yep, I've seen them advertised in the magazines and think they look great. Adds something to a knife that would otherwise look much plainer.
