Most of you will be familiar with the 763mph British record held by Airman Andy Green, set in 1997. Here's the vid:

That was then. This is now...
They are using a current build project as a catalyst for higher learning in the UK.
What a brilliant way to energize a generation of youth and educators!
The land site has been finalized in November 2009 and it will be in South Africa at a dry bed called 'Hakskeen Pan'. The South African government is supporting the project, and it's PR benefits weigh-in nicely for their country as well. (The USA's Black Rock desert has eroded since the previous record and fell off the top of the list.)
You can follow the ingenious concept and progress on their website. My son has me tune in every few weeks. Slated to be finished and running in 2011...
In the meantime the Americans are scrambling to butt-in with a record. Eagle Project

Why do we need a BLOODHOUND Education Programme?
In the UK, and many of the developed countries worldwide, there is a shortage of scientists, engineers and mathematicians and we therefore urgently need our young people to be motivated to enjoy and study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at school and then at university. The BLOODHOUND Project is endeavouring to be the catalyst through which young people will acquire the skills and develop innovative talents that will enable them to overcome the challenges we face on a global scale.
