Thanks to the USN folks and Spyderco, my fav fishing knife, the USN Catcherman has been bloodied today. It arrived only last week, but was put to good use on this little friend (invited to dinner sans head, gills, and guts) acquired this morning from the warm local Gulf beach:

I love H1 steel Spydies. They are the best solution for me in this area, and have stood up to salt water and rough handling with nary a problem. I have one (Salt 1, black, PE) I've been carrying for five years w/not one spot of rust - meanwhile, all my bikes' head stem bolts are shot, chains (except for Wippermans) rusted, and outdoor lighting fixtures corroded.

I LOVE my USN Catcherman! Thanks, Spyderco!

p.s. i know it's sacreligious to head a pompano, but wanted to see how well the serration and filet blade worked - yep, like 'buddah'!

and here's the result: scored the fish, chilled, drizzled warmed butter into the grooves (which solidified), then lightly blackened, put on the grill, turned and basted with fresh-squeezed navel orange juice... side veggies: thai bird chillies, chopped gail lan (chinese flowering broccoli), sprouts, chopped banana pepper, chili sauce... nested on a jasmine rice bed - it's all good!

Nice catch! You've got me drooling with that plate of food. Ive been thinking about getting a salt for fishing. I just cant decide if I want Plain edge or fully serrated.

Looks good man, definitely got me wanting some fish now.

I want to see some pics of the Catcherman too though :D

definitley plain edge for cleaning fish. i would think the cuts would be much cleaner on the fillets.

a few fellows came home with me for lunch today:

and in short order, thanks to my Catcherman, they were properly dressed:

Normally i would use a heavy duty pair of shears on these fellows' fins - but the catcherman's bit of serration certainly helps... i'm really liking this knife - a *lot*!

I haven't decided if i'll further help these gentlemen out of their coats or not. Perhaps a simpler slight scoring, rolling in some House Autrey, and a dip into a hot pool of oil? Or perhaps a dusting of homemade blackening (salt, pepper, thyme, oregano, paprika, and cayenne), a drizzle of butter, and a bit of time under the broiler or in the pan? I'm too tired right now to fire up the grill, or I might have treated them to a nice hot smoke after a short salt bath...

anyhow, one thing i am sure of: my catcherman's a keeper!

used mine today on a king salmon. Great for gutting and was surgically sharp to remove the gills, wasn't too bad scaling either . Wasn't long or flexible enough for the filleting though and found myself doing too many "sawing" motions.

How do you guys think the Catcherman works compared to the Pacific Salt SE as a general fishing / filet knife? I am thinking of going with one of these.
