Hello.

I was just wondering if it's legal to carry a combat knife in Bloomington, Indiana.

I know that the only knives that are illegal by state law, are ballistic knives and switchblades, but local laws might be different, but I can't find any information on the matter other than state law.

I'm going to be moving to bloomington soon, and this will be my first time living in a large city.

My old neighborhood is pretty safe, but there are more chances for something to happen in a larger city, so I'd like to have something more than a pocket knife on me, and my dad used to give me knives, and I still have some kind of combat knife that me gave me.

Thank you for your time.

P.S. The blade of the knife is about 5 1/2 inches.

Hi and welcome to Bloomington! AFAIK, Bloomington has no ordinances regarding knives. See https://bloomington.in.gov/code/ Specifically Title 14, the section on firearms and deadly weapons. Without making any judgements, I will say that Bloomington is a pretty liberal college town and you're going to stick out like a sore thumb carrying the small machete you describe.

With regard to safety, Bloomington is a pretty safe small city. The type of violent inner city crime like you'd see in some other places is virtually non-existent. My kids go to Middle School in what is considered the "worst" neighborhood in town and I have never felt unsafe there and haven't felt unsafe with my kids there. The type of crime you see here is that typically associated with college towns: drunken brawls, some drugs and sexual assualt/rape. Our most famous crimes over the past 20 years have both involved missing females, the most recent, unsolved. I'd certainly recommend a defensive weapon for ladies. A tactical folder would, of course, be less conspicuous. I've carried an Endura 4 and ZT 550 with no issues.

I live in Bloomington and carry fixed blade when I'm fishing ( half the week) and all sizes if folders. There are no city or county ordinances against it that I know of(and I have researched, called sheriff, called city police, etc.) A safe a civil city it is. The university is a different story.
