Hi
i just got a free blower... and its 13amp.. and i'd like to put a motor controler on it to reduce the speed... .. and i don't want to use a gate valve as the blower is quite strong and noisy...... and i need good control of air for my furnace..

what kind of controller would work... and are there economical ones... (surplus)
-- would a large industrial ceiling fan controller work?

thanks for any help

you need to look and see what type motor you mave on the blower. At 13 amps it sounds a bit big for a typical forge. Most fan controllers will not work on the majority of the blowers (properly). I had one on my first forge and it would change speeds on me when least expected. Nothing like looking the other way and the fan shuts off. My blower is in the 2 amp range and puts out about 125 cfm. Then i close off most of the input. I had two blowers that sound very similar to yours. I gave one away and the other is sitting on the shelf. I tried to use it for the forge but way too much pressure and air. i even gated it and still too much. If there is still a label on yours either take a pic of it or describe it and someone here might be able to give you some help.

Hi Chuck
its a central vac blower/vacuum...
Ametek model 115937... suppose to be 105 cfm but its got tonnes of pressure....
i'm using it on my crucible furnace......and it is to melt steel... so it may not be enough... but i definitely have to find a way to make it variable speed to even try it out...

fun stuff

Greg.

105 CFM seem to be on the low side. I would expect a central vac to have much more than that. I gave the other blower of mine to a foundry. They use it to smelt bronze, steel and cast iron. I beleive it pushes more than 200 cfm but sounds like a jet engine. You may try one of the router controllers that HF has. They seem to be able to handle a larger load and are not too expensive. Do you know if the motor has brushes? if it does I beleive it may work. Good luck.

Hi Chuck

i think it does have brushes..
- and this one does sound like a jet.... i believe the spec's say its 105 cfm under 2 inches of water.. ??

that looks to be it...... i'll have to give it a try.....

thank you very much for solving this !!
