I had no idea...I've been making my own since I was a kid.

PVC tubing works great, with a section of steel coat hanger sharpened on one end and some sort of fluff tied on the other for a seal.

Paper cones work well too.

Wonder if they have any poison-dart tips....

Janich's book on blowguns is a great source for ideas on making you own blowguns. I'm just too lazy and I order them from www.blowgunsnw.com. I recommend the .40 and .50 cal for target shooting and plinking around. If you are serious about hunting then step up to the .62 cal by Cold Steel. One of these days I'm going to get the Crawford Survival Staff.

Darts are so cheap is easiest to just buy them. The Japanese use a finishing nail wrapped with some clear paper to make a cone dart. The fly faster than the wire darts sold here.

Does anyone own the Paladin Press blowgun video? Is it good? I've had the book for years...

I have the paintball blwogun, its a .40 cal and it gets those thmbtacks shootin pretty accurately

One of Larsen's Far Side cartoons shows a "white hunter" type holding his neck with a protruding blowgun dart. Off in the bushes is a native and his kid, who's holding the blowgun.
The native dad says, "Don't worry, no poison. He's just practicing!"

Friends of mine have seen the video. They liked it. It was geared towards the hunting/weapon use of the blowgun; not target or competition stuff. I have to borrow it from them and I will let you know how it is.

At the risk of being immodest, my blowgun video is pretty good. Although it's several years old and the blowgun market has changed significantly since then, the basics of the weapon remain the same. As such, all the general information regarding blowgun history, construction of homemade guns and darts, and things like the chronograph testing of different bore diameters are still perfectly valid. If you liked the book, you'll like the video even more.

Stay safe,

Mr. Janich,

Thanks for the reply!

I bought a JR Stupero .625 Magnum blowgun many years ago, and still have it, but can't find darts for it anymore. I loved that blowgun, and it even had a bayonet that attached to the end of it for whatever reason you would need it.

Anyone know where I can find darts, or who is now making this blowgun?

Rattler,

Here's a link to Blowguns Northwest where I'm sure you'll find just about everything and anything for a big bore gun. Last I checked, they were still offering 10" bamboo darts, broadheads and even a bayonet!

Dear Rattler:

The J.R. Stupero company was bought out by J.W. McFarlin, who produced an identical product line for several years. Last year, Lynn Thompson of Cold Steel bought out McFarlin and is now producing a product-improved (thicker tubing) version of the line with the same dart assortment. I consulted with Lynn quite a bit on evaluating blowgun and dart design and he was particularly impressed with comparative chronograph testing of different bore diameters. That was a major reason he went with the .625.

Long story short, Cold Steel is now a primary source of darts for your gun.

Stay safe,

There's a great scene on one of the latest Cold Steel dvds where Lynn Thompson puts one of his blowguns through one heck of a beating. One of their blowguns is on my short list of things to get.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the information. I would like some of the 10" bamboo darts.

Rattler:

I believe both Cold Steel and Blowguns Northwest sell the 10 inch bamboo darts for the .62 cal.

I just got the video. You were right. It is a good video. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough discussion on hunting techinques, etc. I just might buy the .625 Cold Steel model. :)
