Hi All,

I’m a newbie to both knives and the forum. I have been reading these threads and am completely blown away by all the types of stainless steel variation when it comes to blades i.e. 420C, 420HC, AUS-4, 440C, S30V, 440C, ATS-34, 420J2.

Anyway, can someone point me towards a website or chart explaining strength, sharpness, $, the best, the worst, corrosion proof of these steel variation?

Thanks

One of the best introductions to steel alloys is the Steel FAQ sticky on the maintenance forum.
BladeForums.com > Knife Related Subjects > Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment > Steel FAQ

Another good resource is the knife encyclopedia on AG Russel's web site.

AG is a member here, as well as being an icon of the knife community since freakin forever.

Another good resource is Gator97's site mentioned by freedom.

one thing to keep in mind is that not all blades of same steels are created equal.

depending on the heat treat, the blade grind, the edge grind, blade thickness, etc. knives using the same steel can perform differently.
