Blown forge TC use and placement

I just got a type K TC, and a PID to read it with. I also got the ceramic sheath to protect the TC. My question is how to make the best use of it in a single burner blown forge? Should I go in through the side of the forge with the ceramic sheath? Maybe lay the ceramic inside the lining from the front? Or should I just take readings from the front opening as needed? If I just leave it loose would it be practical to check temps from the front, ideally inside my HT baffle, without burning the wires? I will start lining the forge tomorrow so I can build the TC sheath in as needed...Thanks!

Wherever you locate the tip of the tc [thats where the temp is read] make sure it is not in the burner flame; but do have the tip within the working area of the forge so the temp you are reading on the pid is the working temp of your steel.

Good luck with your project, Fred

I have had good luck with several placements.
1) from the back, on the floor, under the burner ports.
2) from the side at the floor, between the burners if two, or behind the burner if one.
3) stuck in the muffle from the rear.

Use a ceramic sheath, and when possible make a TC port for the sheath to be inserted into. The port is just like the burner ports, but fitted to the size of the sheath. Once the sheath is in place, you can seal it at the lining with some satanite, and pack the sheath with Kao-wool from the outside. Leave the last 1" of the sheath ( where the tip is) unpacked.
On the muffle , cut a soft fire brick to fit the end of the muffle as a plug. Drill a hole in the center of the plug to fit the sheath. Insert the sheath all the way in. Use satanite to cement it in place. Pack as above, and place the plug assembly in the muffle from the back side.
