Blown in insulation

Today I had insulation blown in my old house. I was told we had 3-4” up of old pink insulation with about R4 rating. They sealed the cracks and added 13-14” more insulation after drilling vent holes and adding baffles. It wasn’t super expensive, but not cheap. The guy said I would increase to R50 or better. He also said I needed it sealed and vented as much as insulation added.
Any of you wonderful Bladeforums members that know about this stuff….. did I get taken or is that extra stuff really necessary?

Thanks in advance.

It will make a huge difference and you will save on your heating bill. We did it to our old house and it really helped. Ventilation is important as the guy said so the extra stuff seems legit. We were able to get some of the money back via rebate from the power company.

We had windows, HVAC, siding, and a new roof within the last 10 years. I know that will help too.
I alway worry about the “upsell”.

Ya, me too. The humidity increased in our attic after the insulation and we had to add more vents the next summer. The sealing is probably just to the hold the stuff in. Its done now, but I hear ya for sure.

He showed us that the air was going up into the attic. I can’t remember what he called it, but basically around the entire perimeter and at the walls. We had a humidity problem too.

Sound like he did right by you.
