I was thinking of getting several Spydie's, the Bob Lum Chinese folder, the Kiwi and Persian. If anybody has any of these or has any reviews of them. Please let me know, I'd be interested in hearing if they're wise purchases.
thanks

cheers,

Can't go wrong with the Lum. I've wanted one for years and just got a blue handled one yesterday on trade and I love it. Very nice knife and you can never go wrong with Spyderco, it seems. Get one, you'll love it!

Do a search for Persian threads, there have been plenty of posts about this knife from users here.

Not sure if the Lum or Kiwi have been reviewed.

A green almite Lum folder was one of the first few Spydercos I bought. I absolutely love it. It's a fairly unique look, kinda "fancy, and it cuts like...like a... like a Spyderco. I highly recommend it.

Same goes for the Persian. Similar, but different.

I have had a Kiwi for a number of years now. It is probably the best small production knife that I have ever owned, and I have owned quite a few. It does not act like a small knife; it gives you a lot morre edge than you would think. Fnatastic ergonimics-premium steel. And--have a look in the latest AG Russell catalog- they are offered with several new scale materials.

I recently purchased a Persian. Another kettle of fish altogether. This is a really hefty knife, and if you go out in the field, I really believe that it will do anything that you require. Again, fantastic ergonimics. The upswept point is really unusual--it is delicate enough to remove a small spinter from your finger (this is not a theory). A word of warning though-- I think that it looks "dangerous" to a non-knife user----certainly more so than the usual Spyderco. If you want to carry a folder that hefty in a place that's full of such people, be prepared for some raised eyebrows. That being said- I have unqualified praise for the Persian, as well as the Kiwi.

I've always wanted a Lum, but I do own a Kiwi.

First rate little knife that acts much bigger than it is. It will take much more than you can dish out, I assure you. With jigged bone scales and VG10 blade steel, it drips with class and quality. Money well spent.

As it's discontinued, get the Lum first and then the others :)

The Lum is beautiful. A blend of traditional and very high tech (nested liner, eccentric pivot, almite scales). The only downside I can see is it's too pretty to use!

It's a good point, that Lum is so pretty it's hard to use at first. But here's a few pics of the one I've been carrying around for a few years. It's not been getting special treatment. The almite holds up really well. Blade is a little more prone to carry wear because so much of it sticks up above the scales when it's closed. By the way, there's a very nice blue Lum on ebay right now, I think recoil is selling it.

That's a nice review thread. I'm sure individual knives of the same model vary over a wide range. The grinds on my blade are right on, and the lock has always seated dead center and I've not been able to get it to move along the tang. I would encourage folks to send knives back to the seller or to Spyderco if they arrive with ANY obvious problems, even if you plan to beat the hell out of the knife yourself. When I got my first Persian it had some scratches on the blade that looked like someone had slipped a bit on the grinder. You didn't really notice them unless the light was just right. Anyway, it bugged me, so I sent the seller (flamesnknives on ebay) an e-mail, just generally expressing dissapointment, and he immediately sent me a new knife that he hand-picked, as well as a check to cover the shipping to send the first one back. Class act all the way. It was hard to part with a new toy, especially one that I liked so much. But I'm glad I did it.

I guess if I wanted to be picky I could say the grinds on the swedge are a little unbalanced, but it doesn't bother me. The lock problem could be a pivot pin adjustment problem. The first thing I did with my knife was take it apart, and out of the box the lock went all the way to the side, like on a Wegner. Depending on how much I rotated the pin, I could get it to not open or to land right in the middle, so a little fiddling is all it takes.

I've owned a Lum Chinese in green. It is a great knife! I love the green color, it looks really classy. The blade cuts like nothing I had ever seen. (Fully flat ground) The VG10 is one of my favorite steels. It seemed to fit my hand fairly well despite the odd shape. Fit and finish is fantastic! All in all a great knife.

My Lum had lock problems also. It moved all the way over and started to rub against the liner. I did as Chiro and fixed it myself using the adjustable pivot. The green coating holds up good, I've had mine for a few years now.

I've had my Kiwi for a little over a year now and it is an EXCELLENT knife for a number of occasions. I usually carry mine in a homemade leather slip sheath to keep it looking like new. Trust me, this is a knife that you won't regret.
