Blue 940 (BM KotM 10/00) as EDC?

Bought a blue-handled 940 yesterday. I've wanted one since they came out, but I could never get everything to "click" until now.

It's clipped to my pocket today, displacing my small Sebenza as EDC. Really love it.

Anyway, my actual question is -- how do people generally feel about discontinued / collector knives as EDC's?

Yeah, the Sebenza cost 3x as much, but I can buy another one if need be. These blue 940's are awfully hard to come by.

Thoughts? It seems a shame to just lock it away in my knife case...

Hey Mike, if I were you I would put the Blue KOTM away and buy another 940. I've had mine for a couple of months now, and just take it out once in while and look at it. I'm still saving for a Sebenza, which I will probably just put away and take out to look at...

Ah, what a shameful waste.
Carry it, use it, and enjoy it-why buy a great knife, and leave it sitting in a drawer? Shake my head every time I hear that nonsense.

Absolutely carry and use it. Other than purely "art" pieces, I feel all knives, limited edition, numbered or the like are meant to be carried.

If we are fortunate enough to be able to afford and carry customs/numbered editions/limited editions so much the better.

The satisfaction of having a fine knife clipped to your pocket is ,IMHO, a good part of what this hobby is all about.

Another very satisfying part of the hobby is being able to get here and share these ideas with others with similar interests.

Yeah, I'm torn. Similar concept -- I bought my wife a new '99 Durango a couple years ago. She put about 25K miles on it the first year. Then she wanted to park it and drive her '83 Toyota "because she didn't want to put too many miles on the Durango". I assured her it was pretty silly to spend $30K on a new vehicle, just to park it in the garage. USE IT!

This is a little different though, because we can always buy (and did - a 2001) a new car. A new 10/00 BM940 isn't going to come along.

And no, I really don't care for the green or black handled versions nearly so much.

I say use it man! Enjoy carrying something a little different. I've got a 710 with Alum Scales on its way to me and it will be joining my regular carry ensemble.

And the day I scrape enough cash together for a Woodie Sebenza my regular one goes in the drawer.

Carry it, use it, show it love.

That's true, but something else probably will.
For instance:
I had a blue 940, and bought a spare 'cause I liked it so much.
Sold the spare, 'cause it was just sitting there.
Sold the used one, when a small Sebenza took its job.
Thinking of selling the Sebenza, 'cause a custom took it's place.
Hoping it stops there

There are alot of guys who collect on here, and will have a different opinion. I'm just one who either uses it, or gets rid of it (helps fund the next "gotta-have"

).
We're all sick, I'm just not sure who's sicker

Use it. Unless you collect rare knives in order to resell them years later at a profit, there's really not much point in "collecting" production knives. If you want, save up and try to find another to keep NIB, but if you only have one, what good does it do you under glass? The joy of having a knife you love is to carry it around in your pocket and use it. I have a serial numbered blue inlay Native that I carry and use regularly. The knife would be worth very little to me if I kept it in a drawer. I get enjoyment out of it every day that it rides in my pocket though.

This space for rent.

i bought a blue handled 940 a while ago and carried it around for a bit. i loved that knife. my plain sebenza is still the knife clipped to my pocket most of the time, but the 940 gets a good amount of carry time.

in response to an earlier question, rather recently i met a man with a Porsche 917, beautiful car. being a car enthusiast and amateur racer, i stopped to talk to him about the car, and asked him whether or not he was ever hesitant to daily drive the thing and park it around town. i mentioned that the Ferrari F355 i drive was strictly a weekend car, and he told me, "you never know what tomorrow'll bring, so to me, every day is sunday." this was on a thursday night on a busy street. i didn't need him to tell me the "you might not be alive" thing as i had already applied that to many other things, such as knives. i bought my sebenza a while ago and stared at it for a good bit before i decided to put it to use. it was rather depressing to see the character marks start showing up on the handle, just like it was to see scratches on the beautiful blue anodizing of my 940 and scratches on the underbody of the 355, but well, i bought it, might as well enjoy it.
