Blue area on D2

For the past few months my D2 blade from queen has developed a light grey patina as expected, however I have been noticing that as you get closer to the handle the grey becomes a little more spotty. This area when looked at in the light produces a blue reflection. I was wondering if I had some bad rust up in that area.
Thanks

I don't think it's rust. I think it's part of the oxidation process where the light hits it a certain way and produces the color haze/distortion.

The area nearer the handle does not see as much action and/or attention to wiping down. Often there is more accumulate oil and other things there. All this can affect the look.

Peaches, strawberries, meat and other things can cause interesting colors. Peaches seem to leave a really nice blueish color. Bad rust is orange/red so if it's not that I wouldn't worry.

D2, depending on heat treat, can develop some funky looking patina. I wouldn't be concerned, it's got plenty of chromium.

I'm pretty sure the tang is drawn back to a lower hardness, which would also explain the uneven patina coloration. Still, nothing to worry about. Seems pretty normal.

Valid point^. I've noticed it's easy to reveal the drawn-back portions of Case's CV blades, near the tang, when patinating them (I dip the blade in a hot water/vinegar mix). The slightly softer steel in those portions darkens more deeply, and quicker than the forward portions of the blades, and leaving a well-defined 'edge' between the two zones. I've read that the hardness of a given steel, independent of it's elemental makeup, can somewhat affect how easily it oxidizes or corrodes, and that would seem to confirm it.

Also agree, the variation in patina is nothing to worry about.

I remember in my naïve knife days, my buddy had a new schrade 152 sharpfinger. We went trout fishing with it and caught a few keepers. We cleaned them with the 152, and the blade tarnished/patina'd with that blu-ish tint like you are talking about. We thought something was wrong with the knife, and he returned it, LOL. If we only knew then what we know now.

I don't necessarily think there is anything to worry about, and the things you use it on have different results on the patina, like others have said.
