Well, I've been into knives for about 4 years now and I decided to use some Christmas money to pick up my first Spyderco. I spend an excessive amount of time reading the forums and have always heard great things about them, but for whatever reason had always gone in another direction until now. Since I in no way "needed" another knife, the field was pretty wide open as to what I would pick up. This being the case, and not being very familiar with their product line, I decided to head over to the Spyderco website to see what they had to offer... HUGE MISTAKE!

I quickly found their 2013 product catalog and downloaded the PDF. I new right away that I, and my wallet, were soon to be in big trouble :D
After four years of being into knives, I have collected about 20 assorted folders and fixed blades. Some would argue I have shown remarkable restraint, lol. Then I found Spyderco and almost immediately I had compiled a list of at least a dozen knives I "had" to have.

Since plunking down $1,000 all at once for a bunch of knives may have been overly detrimental to my marriage, I knew that I had to find a way to curb my enthusiasm a bit. After much deliberation, I decided that I'd better start small, both in size and price, with a new sub 3" EDC blade. I was stuck between the Cat, the Persistence, and the Delica until I found out about the blue run of the Persistence that is currently available, bingo!

The knife was waiting for me when I got home from work last night and it is fantastic! I'm big on looking for great values in general and I have never come across better build quality for the price in a blade. I love the color. I love the texture of the G-10. The jimping is just right. As a lefty, the four way clip is a huge bonus. This is by far the nicest liner lock I have. Even the sound it makes, *click*, inspires confidence and screams quality. And as satisfied as I am right now, in the back of my head I'm already starting to think about my next purchase... Sage, Caly, PM2? It's a slippery slope, no doubt.

I don't post on the forums much, but this Spydie got me off my butt  Thanks to all for the resources here. They have been a big help.

**Update**
In the interest of full disclosure, the action on the knife suddenly became gritty later today. It was pretty rough to open and close. I am not advising this, because I have read about the warranty concerns... But in literally about ten minutes, I was able to fully disassemble the knife and make the action better than new.

I was easily able to removal the screws with my el cheapo torx-driver, no "soft screws" or "too much loc-tite." I wiped everything down well with a piece of paper towel and then applied oil vary sparingly. Reassembled, the blade is still dead-centered and deployment is now silky smooth. YMMV, but I've got no complaints.

Welcome to the club! You've been Spyder bit. I'm finding it hard to recommend which knife you get next, because they are all great. Take a look at a Manix 2, they are widely available unlike the Para 2. If you can find a Para 2 at a decent price, get one of those.

I have the same reaction as you to the cheaper Spyderco knives. I can't believe that you can get such a great knife for around $40. The ergonomics, materials, fit and finish are all fantastic. I just ordered a blue Ambitious to go along with my Tenacious. Can't wait to get it!

By giving us exactly what we want, I think its fair to say that Mr. Sal is a very sneaky fellow.

"Mr. Sal is a very sneaky fellow."
-Agreed!

Here are a couple of pics:

My small Vantage Pro is also a tremendous value, but I wish it was just a little bit bigger. I can't really get a good four finger grip on it. The Buck will still be my choice for office carry for now, but the new guy will be in my pocket otherwise!

You should get a blue Ambitious for the office. I think most sheeple would find it to not be overly frightening.

Stig. Believe me, I'm tempted to grab a blue Tenecious as well as the Ambitious just because, while they're around. If I do upgrade the Vantage though, I'd probably go with the Chaparral. Time will tell, but there are definitely more Spydies in my future.

Chaparral would be a great office knife. It's the perfect little slicer.
Or the Spyderco Gayle Bradley Air for a little more money has better materials and is definitely a gentleman's knife.

I should shut up and stop giving you ideas. :D

Congrats on your first Spyder(good choice, they're cheap knives are very good) and welcome to the Spyderco obsession. =] I have 14 keeper folders.. 8 of them are Spyderco's lol. And there are more to come in the future as I have a few more on my list lol.

They're excellent knives... and that's putting it mildly and simple. =]

-LOL! Yeah, no problems there. That catalog blows me away.

Thanks Chris! The Resilience looks like a tank!! Getting into fixed blade territory there... :) Some of your posts around here contributed to me picking up an Enlan EL-02 a couple of months ago. I haven't used it or the Persistence enough yet to have any input, but it will be interesting to see how these two China-made 8Cr13Mov blades compare in edge retention over time.

Hard to nit-pick a $15 blade, but what's up with the goofy pivot screw on the EL-02? Mine came loose almost immediately, leading to significant play. The good news is that I was able to apply enough torque with a large flat head driver in one of the grooves to snug it back up, no need for a mod... yet.

Back to the Persistence, I forgot to mention how much I like how the design allows you to choke up all the way to the edge without actually having a choil. The difference is shown pretty well in the comparison pic with the Buck above. If you forced me to make a criticism, it would be that the angle of the thumb ramp seems a little too aggressive. I will need to actually give it some use though to see how it plays out. Seems like it would be an easy mod if I do want to change it down the road.

Pretty strange about the gritty pivot. I never had a problem with my Tenacious. I did disassemble it for cleaning and when I lubricated it again it was much smoother than factory. I couldn't flick it out from the factory, but now it's very easy.

I recently joined the Spydie-club as well and landed on a Persistence. You basically echoed my exact feelings on this knife: for the price it is crazy nice and super sharp out of the box. I took mine apart when I coated the scales and used some Froglube on the pivot. Very smooth and crisp now... Not that it wasn't when new.

Here's a pic of my custom design...

A YT reviewer tested both EL02 and Tenacious and as expected, Tenacious won :)

However, other factors might be at play, i.e. factory sharpening weakening the edge, etc that I am still learning (from cliff stamp and others testing, over at Spyderco.com forum), but at least for now, Spyderco should have better HT and final sharpening (unless you get a lemon Spydie vs a good apple from Enlan).
