Picked this head up at a pawn shop in town, it's a 1.5 lb head. There's blue paint on it though. Did Hultafors make a head that was painted blue back in the day or what exactly do I have here?

Thanks all

The Swedes weren't very inventive with their export axe head colour schemes. Orange or some version of blue seem to be the only ones. I was given a new 2 1/4 lb'er in orange in the early 60s and personally bought a medium blue new 3 1/2 lb'er in the early 80s.

With global trade encouragement after WWII the Swedes tried very hard to compete in the n. American market but the only way they could sell was through copying n. American patterns and selling at lower prices. No one ever thought to compare quality until the Asians got into the game beginning with 'made in Japan or Taiwan' stuff in the 1960s. None of the established and reputable axe makers survived that 'war'. Axe making in Sweden (and USA!) is now become a cottage industry and quality manufacturers make no bones about trying to 'lowest bidder' compete anymore.

I don't recall personally handling anything marked "hultafors" that wasn't painted in that blue.

I like a 18" handle for a 1.5 lb. axe. I also have one with a 22" handle that works well. When that was made the company was called Hults Bruk. There was a foil label that said Agdor on it during the eighties.

They still come that way in blue. I have a couple Montreal pattern H-B Agdor axes (28" 2-1/2 $ 3-/1/2 lbs) I recently ordered from Canada.
