Blue Manix 2...first day fishing.

Well, took the kayak out today and brought the manix 2 along just for grins. Caught a couple mackerel and a small amberjack. Bite was on but i had to bail early because of a thunderstorm. I won't be bringing the manix out fishing again though. It already showed small rust spots on the edge by the time I came in. Kayak fishing is pretty tough on a knife. Surf launches mean your clothes are completely saturated in saltwater from the get go, so any knofe is just bathing in salt the whole day. I'm going to reserve the kayak strictly for the "salts" in the future.

Good news is, I'm njoying the knife. I attached my truck key to it, so it's essentially my key ring so I carry it all the time. I have used it for normal stuff around the house and chopped the mackerel today with it. I even filleted the amberjack with it just for fun. I am waiting til I've used it a bit more to give a better review, but I'm happy so far. What I can say already though is that (contrary to what I heard) the edge retention of the bd1 blade isn't bad at all IMO. MILES ahead of the h1 salt! I've had it for a few days and used it a fair bit and its still shaving sharp. I think it holds an edge as well as my benchmade mini grip with 154cm. I don't know...the fish are biting so I'm gonna do my best to dull it up this week! :-).

P.S. dont make fun of my tiny fish! :-) The little pan fish is a snowy grouper. Caught him on a jig and was using him for bait...the fish wouldn't eat him, so I figured I would.

No salt water anywhere near me anymore, but I used to fish the Gulf and marshes of S. La. regularly. Did you coat the blade with anything first? Past experiences have shown that a coating of a protectant of your choice (I like the Tuff Cloth for this) can help considerably. But you're right. A knife designed to handle salt is always better.

Got a chuckle out of that . :)

Good catch, had the black light weight manix, but let her go. Thought the blue,
being translucent, looks more interesting, but unfortunately I defaulted to my
usual color. Now, I'll have to pick a blue one in the future.

I was wondering what would be a good saltwater fishing knife....... What do you normally use?

Hey KC, don't even think about it...get a spyderco salt! They are bullet proof! They are tough, light, and they do not rust AT ALL! I took the manix fishing again today and again came in with numerous tiny rust spots. I was able to wipe them all off, but I'm going to quit taking it out. My normal fishing knife is a plain edge dragonfly salt that I wear around my neck. I can't say enough good things about at knife! I am going to the states in a few weeks and I am going to buy another spyderco...probably the fully serrated "pacific salt". I think the plain edge dragonfly and a serrated edge pacific salt should be a hell of a combo! Btw, the salts are damn cheap too IMO. You could buy BOTH the dragonfly and the pacific salt for just over $100!!

Hey KC, try Flitz. Another I product I have used is Naval Jelly which is really a mild phosphoric acid I believe. It kind of depends on how severe the rust is. If it's a few light specks you can almost just wash it off. More severe and you have to use one of the products and some serious elbow grease. If it's bad enough you might have to get some 400 grit paper which will work but you will change the finish on your blade. I use the salt models all the time so honestly I don't have much insight or great advice for you. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Surf, are you ok with me living vicariously through you! I always love your threads and pictures. Keep up the great fishing threads especially with knife pictures.

Sure man, I'll keep sharing because I enjoy it, but I often wish more folks would share their own experiences. To me there is nothing inherently cool about fishing. It's just easy for me to post about it because I love it and I'm passionate about it. I can get just as much enjoyment from seeing a guy who loves carpentry, woodworking, welding or whatever posting about how he used his spydercos in his latest project. I reckon it's not what we do that makes us interesting but what's in our heads and hearts while we're doing it.

Sorry for waxing philosophical. I'll get back to fishing and knife pics soon. ;)

Hey surf any idea how to remove rust stains from a spyderco blade?

Lots of ways to combat and remove rust, but once there is positive damage (metal that was corroded away) you cannot do much. Same as anything else that is susceptible to rust, polish it away. You want o use a bit of common sense when using any polish. Make sure the blade is sufficiently clean (wash it and dry it completely), then a light coating of mineral oil would be alright. Or the other option is to not use that same knife to prepare your food.

Thanks I read where the flitz was toxic and you couldn't use your blade for food after using it?

Another,Non-toxic option would be a Lansky Eraser block.I've been using one for years, works like an eraser and won't scratch or leave a blemish like metal polishes will. The only con, tried using it to remove some light corrosion on brass and succeed,by scratched up the finish.

I thought corrosion resistance was one of the things BD1 did well. I guess H1 is where its at for you salt water knife toting folks.
This thread made me think; would'nt a Salt LW Manix in H1 be awesome?! Ceramic ball, titanium mini liners, and coated spring?
