Hi,
So I applied cold blue to a BK9 after doing some mods to the steel. The issue is after about 3 chops into relatively soft wood, the bluing came off.

Is this to be expected because I have had better wear results with a vinegar patina?

Thanks

How many coats did you do? I like the look of cold bluing, but it doesn't seem to wear as long as a patina. Looks like the cold bluing isn't very deep.

I let my Beckers soak in gun blue for about 15 a session and repeat that about 2-3 times. So far some of it has worn down from pitch black to a dark navy blue but its still pretty prominent.

^^^Same here. I soak them for about 20 mins. Let them rest for a couple of hours and then repeat. I usually do this three or four times. It does wear but I haven't noticed that it is at a rate any faster then say a vinegar based patina.

hmmm.......
clean blade
wipe down with acetone or alcohol to make sure there is no oil on it.
heat blade in not quite boiling water.
wipe it dry then wipe on the bluing.
wait.
lightly scrub with wet scotchbrite pad
hot water heat
dry
wipe down with bluing
wait
repeat until it's as dark as you want it, generally 3-4 coats, then oil it
let sit overnight and you should be good to go.

I guess this is the problem. I followed the instructions from Birchwood Casey and they said to leave it for 2 -3 mins max, so thats what I did....

When you guys say it has word down, about how much work have you done with the knife?

I find battoning is the one that really wears out the blue. Its not really the blue itself wearing down either IMO but just the top layer of oxidisation (?) or something. I'll try and get a picture for you.

hi Cam

I was carving with a BK2 and chopping with a 9. I will just reblue these and test again...
